More rain on the way for flood-hit Buller, thunderstorms risk forecast from Southern Westland all the way up to Waikato

The MetService is forecasting rain for much of Aotearoa with risk of thunderstorms overnight from Southern Westland up to Waikato.
More heavy rain is forecast for Buller and other areas hit hard by the weekend deluge and flooding.
MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Buller and the ranges of Westland for an 11-hour period, starting from about 6pm on Wednesday till 5am on Thursday.
Much of the rest of Aotearoa will also see rain late Wednesday or early Thursday with thunderstorm risk from Southern Westland all the way up to Waikato.
MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes said the region could expect showers on Wednesday morning, turning to rain in the evening when the warning will “kick-in”. ....

Three motorists have been rescued from their cars after being trapped by floodwaters as wild weather batters the South Island - and causes disruptions in Auckland and Wellington.
A front-loader and a helicopter were called to rescue people stranded on the roofs of their vehicles, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said.
A state of emergency was also declared in Marlborough by deputy mayor Nadine Taylor at 12.20pm.
The Marlborough District Council has advised residents of the Lower Terrace in Renwick to evacuate their properties and stay with family or friends for the next 24 hours, as the stop bank at Conders Bend is beginning to overtop. ....
