Amy Wentworth to focus on teamwork as New Philadelphia superintendent
NEW PHILADELPHIA – The new superintendent of New Philadelphia City Schools wants to focus on unity and teamwork after she takes over the reins on Aug. 1.
We want to make sure that we are in this together and that everybody understands that they are valued and they are important to this team, said Amy Wentworth. We couldn t do it without everybody being part of this. That s my big goal.
Wentworth, who has been the district s assistant superintendent since 2015, was the unanimous choice of the board of education at a special meeting Thursday night.  ....

Chippewa among top in U.S. News and World Report's High Schools Rankings


The determining factors
Six factors considered by U.S. News are college readiness, math and reading proficiency, math and reading performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rate.
This year, about 17,860 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia were rated. In Ohio more than 800 schools were ranked.
Within several of the categories evaluated, Chippewa High School ranked No. 1 in the state in math and reading proficiency and No. 5 in the state in math and reading performance, Rodriguez said. It also excelled in college readiness, state-required tests, and advanced placement scores.
Chippewa High School s advanced placement course participation rate is 31%; it s minority enrollment is 4%; and 29% of its students are classified as economically disadvantaged. ....

Portage schools are winners, losers in Ohio K-12 education funding plan


Some Portage County schools are big winners under Ohio s proposed state budget, which promises to completely redo how the state funds K-12 public education. 
But local superintendents are skeptical, pointing out that proposals are often changed by the time the budget gains final approval. The proposed gains, even in districts projected to eventually gain millions, aren t enough for most districts to be less reliant on property taxes. And several districts are projected to receive only small gains, and one district is projected to lose a big chunk of funding over the next five years because of declining enrollment.
In 1997, nearly 25 years ago, the Ohio Supreme Court declared the funding system unconstitutional following a landmark lawsuit, DeRolph v. State. Justices didn t state then how much funding would be needed to adequately fund schools, and lawmakers have been trying to sort that out ever since. ....
