COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMBF) – South Carolina could start transitioning to Phase 1b in the COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan in about two to three weeks, according to the director of the state’s Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Dr. Edward Simmer testified Tuesday afternoon during a Ways and Means Healthcare Subcommittee meeting, where lawmakers were hearing testimony on the teacher vaccine bills that would place teachers, school staff and daycare workers in Phase 1a.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMBF) â The leading doctor in South Carolinaâs fight against COVID-19 said she knows that the vaccine distribution process has been frustrating for many people who are waiting to see if they will be next in line.
South Carolina Epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell said during a media briefing on Wednesday that the Department of Health and Environmental Control has received a lot of questions from the community, the media and lawmakers on when certain people will be included in the vaccination plan.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMBF) – The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control will be expanding its surveillance of COVID-19 variants after the UK and South African strains were discovered in the state.
Last week, two cases of the South African strain were discovered in South Carolina. It was the first time the variant had been detected in the United States. Then on Saturday, DHEC revealed that the UK variant had been detected in South Carolina.
