The enduring character is that the Republican Party has always been founded around a core constituency of people who are considered by themselves and others to be typical americans, but they are not a majority of the population. The Democratic Party has always been a coalition of people who were supposed some time to be typical americans but who together can be a majority. They dont always hold together and we get schisms and fights within the Democratic Party.
