Hamilton, Ontario, Film: Mortal Kombat by Albert DeSantis

While there have been a few attempts at adapting the ‘90s bloody fighter video game phenomenon Mortal Kombat, it hasn’t taken off. The latest reboot/remake of Mortal Kombat doesn’t sanitize the game’s goofy, gory goodness and instead goes for full carnage. This makes it one of the more faithful and decent video game adaptations. Sure, there are some dumb story decisions, pointless filler, and a cast of sprawling magic kung-fu fighting freaks so long that an index card would be handy. But there’s still enjoyment in the simple pleasures of an evil flying demon lady being cut in half by a chainsaw hat.

Mortal Kombat Movie Review | The Young Folks

As an exercise in pure, shameless fan service, Mortal Kombat (2021) certainly honors not just the 90s video game series it adapts, but also its cinematic predecessors. Shot and lit like a mature TV movie that just happens to be arriving in theaters and via HBO Max this weekend, Mortal Kombat does excel in two areas the franchise used to pull its punches in: this is one bloody, gory, fight simulation with some stupendous choreography. The film deserves a lot of credit for acknowledging this supposedly obvious fact, that what drove kids and adults to countless hours hunting for fatalities was the game’s visceral content and devotion to ultra violence. The previous films certainly took notes from the basic story of the games, but their PG-13 ratings felt like a total misfire, an excuse to dumb down the accessibility of the film’s appeal so they could sell more tickets and toys.

Mortal Kombat review: A worthy contender for a franchise in the making

Our Mortal Kombat review is a (mostly) spoiler-free discussion of the legendary video game franchise’s latest adaptation. I’ve made it no secret how much I love Mortal Kombat. Not only did I grow up on the games, but the original Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 was one of my all-time favorites. It might not have stood the tests of time, but it remained the top-rated video game adaptation until recently. This year’s Mortal Kombat had a lot to contend with. The video game franchise has been going steady for 30 years and has garnered millions of fans. The wide variety of characters are as diverse as they are dangerous, and the universe’s lore remains as complex and interesting as ever.
