Symposium focuses on the rise of resiliency efforts By Michael R. Malone By Michael R. Malone 04-08-2021 More than 60 environmental researchers, practitioners, and leaders from the Caribbean and South Florida offered presentations highlighting the “human center dimension” of climate change and resiliency. The “Sub-Tropical and Tropical Coastal Resilience: Social, Economic, and Physical Adaptations in South Florida and the Caribbean” symposium promoted an interdisciplinary approach for the growing global movement that seeks to anticipate and prepare for the shocks and stresses related to climate change. Renowned medical anthropologist Paul Farmer and Miami-Dade County’s Chief Resilience Officer James Murley, in their respective keynote presentations, headlined the many panelists who shared their insights and experiences during the full-day virtual conference. ....
Virtual forum will tackle intersection of climate change, societal barriers By Emmalyse Brownstein By Emmalyse Brownstein 04-01-2021 Experts will explore why human-centered issues must be addressed in conjunction with things like rising seas, stronger storms, and increased hydro-static pressure at a symposium on April 7. The University of Miami will host the “Sub-Tropical and Tropical Coastal Resilience: Social, Economic, and Physical Adaptations in South Florida and the Caribbean” forum on Wednesday, April 7. The virtual webinar will discuss research from the South Florida and Caribbean region about how climate change directly impacts people and the economy. “We should think of climate change as similar to a prism, which must be observed, analyzed, and addressed from a variety of angles in order to best appreciate its characteristics and flaws, and each of those vantage points has associated methods of investigation,” said Sonia Chao, the ev ....
Team works to enhance South Florida’s coastal resilience By News@TheU By News@TheU 03-15-2021 An interdisciplinary group of University professors is working to develop, test, and deploy newly engineered artificial reefs that could decrease wave energy and help save coastlines from destruction during storms. Miami’s beautiful beaches and tropical climate are its biggest asset, attracting thousands of tourists and potential residents each year. But with climate change pushing sea levels and temperatures up, along with more menacing tropical storms, South Florida’s coastlines are under threat. While communities are pouring millions into beach restoration projects or seawall restoration efforts, one group of professors at the University of Miami is using its knowledge about coral reefs, coastal engineering, architecture, and communications to come up with a more sustainable solution. ....
World’s wealthiest man has a (tunnel) vision for Miami The Miami River meanders through the city. Photo: The Associated Press 02-12-2021 Photo: The Associated Press By Robert C. Jones Jr. 02-12-2021 Elon Musk, who heads the list of the top 10 richest people, has proposed building a tunnel underneath the Miami River to alleviate traffic gridlock. Engineers say it can be done, despite the challenges posed by Miami’s porous limestone. Architects say sustainable initiatives shouldn’t be abandoned. When it opened in 1994, it was hailed as the greatest engineering feat of its time. The 31.5-mile Channel Tunnel, often called the ‘Chunnel’ for short, links southern England and northern France, carrying more than 10 million passengers and more than a million tons of freight each year. With 23.5 miles of the passageway running under the English Channel, the Chunnel is the world’s longest undersea tunnel. ....
