Water doesn’t flow through concrete and it doesn’t flow through asphalt. If Fort Lauderdale had less concrete and asphalt, the flooding wouldn’t have been nearly as bad, experts say.

Elon Musk, who heads the list of the top 10 richest people, has proposed building a tunnel underneath the Miami River to alleviate traffic gridlock. Engineers say it can be done, despite the challenges posed by Miami’s porous limestone. Architects say sustainable initiatives shouldn’t be abandoned.
When it opened in 1994, it was hailed as the greatest engineering feat of its time. The 31.5-mile Channel Tunnel, often called the ‘Chunnel’ for short, links southern England and northern France, carrying more than 10 million passengers and more than a million tons of freight each year. With 23.5 miles of the passageway running under the English Channel, the Chunnel is the world’s longest undersea tunnel.
Although the state says a tunnel under the New River would cost $1 billion a mile, the creator of the SpaceX rocket says it could be done for $10 million to $20 million per mile.
