lester holt. good evening. the spring of our discontent which has already brought us the worst tornado season in recent memory is now adding fire, heat and still more flooding to the mix. in arizona, a wildfire already that state s third biggest ever, has burned over 200 square miles and continues to grow. in the upper midwest it s water that has tens of thousands of people on the move. a flood emergency affecting more than a half dozen states tonight. and then there is the record heat. 90s, even triple digit temperatures baking spring flowers and breaking records in at least 25 cities today. we ve got it all covered tonight. we begin with nbc s janet shamlian. reporter: a major wildfire in arizona. fueled by high temperatures and gusty winds is sending smoke as far as new mexico and southern colorado. some 1,300 firefighters from across the country are battling the blaze which has ravaged more than 140,000 acres. the column that s up in the air the last few days ....
i m diane dwyer. today marks the 30th anniversary of the aids epidemic. on june 5th, 1981, the federal government released a report documenting the first cases of what would come to be known as aids. more than one million americans are now living with hiv, and here in the bay area, thousands of people are taking part in one of the country s biggest aids fundraisers. nbc bay area s monte francis is in san francisco with the story for us. hello, monte. reporter: diane, we re here in the castro which has really been at the center of the aids awareness movement for the past 30 years. you can see a pink ribbon, the universal symbol for aids awareness. 30 years ago the federal government issued a warning about a rare pneumonia affecting gay men. the disease would later come to be known as aids. today to coincide with the anniversary, 2500 cyclists left san francisco, and will spend the next week riding all the way to los angeles as part of the annual aids life cycle ride. t ....
plead not guilty this morning to the sex assault charges against him. dominique strauss-kahn is accused of assaulting and trying to rape a maid at a manhattan hotel. strauss-kahn has been under house arrest since his release last month on $6 million bond. it includes 24-hour monitors and armed guards. if he s convicted he faces up to 25 years behind bars. former nfl star plaxico burress is a free man today. the former nfl new york giants wide receiver was released from prison in upstate new york today. burress was jailed after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh with an unlicensed handgun he took into a manhattan nightclub. before that incident burress was at the top of his game. he made the game-winning catch earlier that year in super bowl xlii. he plans to play in the nfl again. a woman is dead and two others seriously injured after a stabbing in fairfax county. this happened early this morning in an apartment complex along braddock springs road in centrev ....
