i'm diane dwyer. today marks the 30th anniversary of the aids epidemic. on june 5th, 1981, the federal government released a report documenting the first cases of what would come to be known as aids. more than one million americans are now living with hiv, and here in the bay area, thousands of people are taking part in one of the country's biggest aids fundraisers. nbc bay area's monte francis is in san francisco with the story for us. hello, monte. >> reporter: diane, we're here in the castro which has really been at the center of the aids awareness movement for the past 30 years. you can see a pink ribbon, the universal symbol for aids awareness. 30 years ago the federal government issued a warning about a rare pneumonia affecting gay men. the disease would later come to be known as aids. today to coincide with the anniversary, 2500 cyclists left san francisco, and will spend the next week riding all the way to los angeles as part of the annual aids life cycle ride. this year the ride is expected to raise a record $13 million for aids research. it's the kind of research that has been key in the fight against the disease. experts say it's because of the drug regimens now available that an hiv diagnosis is no longer a death sentence as it was for so many 30 years ago. >> first of all, it's not over. people may think oh, hiv, aids, it's over. it's not over. in san francisco alone, two new infections a day in san francisco. so we want everyone to make sure they get tested. everyone should know their hiv status. we want people who are positive to get into care just as quickly as possible. and we want to raise the awareness and eliminate the stigma that is still associated with this disease. >> reporter: now this is the tenth year for the aids life cycle ride. and the cyclists are expected to complete their 545-mile trek to l.a. in seven days. progress has been made in this fight against the disease. but awareness is still key, experts say, because one in five people with the virus doesn't even know that he or she is infected. live in san francisco tonight, monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, monte. in east palo alto, police say a 3-month-old boy was shot and killed early this morning, and his parents were shot and injured. it happened in the 400 block of wisteria drive near the palo alto municipal golf course just before 1:00 this morning. police are searching for the gunman tonight. nbc bay area's kimberly tere joins us from the east palo alto police department with the latest on what happened. kim? >> reporter: diane, east palo alto police say they brought in more resources, and they're doing everything they can to find those responsible for the triple shooting that left that infant dead. police say a redwood city family had just gotten into their car this morning after leaving a baby shower. it was just before 1:00 a.m. they were, as you mentioned, on the 400 block of wisteria lane when police say two suspects walked up to the car and opened fire. the mother and father, both 22 years old, suffered serious but nonlife-threatening gunshot wounds. their 3-month-old infant boy was fatally shot in the head. another child, a 3-year-old boy was also inside the car, but he was not injured. >> our thoughts and prayers are with the family, and with our community, because this is a tragic loss. we are not going to spare any resources. we're going to put everything we have to make sure that we hold those persons that are responsible for this heinous act responsible, and that they basically the community will have some form along with the family of justice. >> reporter: after the shooting, the parents tried to drive to the hospital themselves, but didn't make it. police stepped in to escort them. right now east palo alto police say officers are canvassing the neighborhood, looking for any clues that might bring them closer to finding the shooters. a sketch artist was brought in this afternoon to meet with witnesses, and to create composite sketches of the suspect. so take a look now out what we're showing you this. is a first suspect sketch. it is a hispanic male in his mid teens to early 20s, 130 to 140 pounds with a thin build, brown eyes, medium to dark complexion. he has no noticeable tattoos or piercings, and was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. let me show you how a sketch of the suspect suspect, a hispanic male in his early 20s, 5'9" to 5'10", 180 pounds, dark brown hair, dark eyes, medium complexion, no facial hair. noticeable tattoos or piercings. and he was wearing a dark-colored beanie at the time of the shooting. so if you have any information about either of these suspects or the shooting that happened very early this morning, you are asked to call east palo alto police. live in east palo alto, kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. >> all right, thank you, kimberly. we're following some breaking news out of sunnyvale tonight as well of a body found in a front yard. this happened at a home near pome and west peremptory avenues. the body was discovered around 10:30 this morning, but they're not row rest leasing more information at this point. we will bring you more on the story as soon as we learn it. in the meantime, santa clara county sheriff's deputies are investigating if human remains are found in a park west of morgan hill. they discovered the remains doing maintenance at uvas canyon county park. law enforcement is cross-checking the remains with missing persons cases, but sheriff sergeant rick sung says he does not believe if remains belong to missing nursing student michelle le. he says the remains appear to have been there, though, less than a year. more poor economic news could cause more political issues for the president. nbc bay area's brian mooar reports both parties realize the economy will likely be the key to the white house in 2012. >> reporter: this past week brought some discouraging jobs numbers. only 54,000 jobs added in may. unemployment up to 9.1%. now the white house is once again confronting fears of a double-dip recession. >> we've added more than two million jobs there is a major difference between a jobless recovery and a very deep hole that we're climbing our way out of. >> reporter: as republicans begin their bid to retake the white house, the timing couldn't be much better. >> when he took office, the economy was in recession, and he made it worse. >> when barack obama became president, gasoline is about $1.80 a gallon. now it's up to $4 a gallon. >> reporter: amid the budget battles on capitol hill, the two parties are fighting over the causes and cures for the nation's financial woes. >> we can talk about the past all you want. the public wants to know about the future. what are you going to do to create jobs, good-paying jobs. >> what are you going to do. >> in our country. well, as i said, what the president has done has improved the situation from where it may have been. >> reporter: a healthy debate over an economy that appears to be anything but healthy. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. well, the record rain may have moved on at this point. lingering showers are still causing some problems in parts of the bay area. and we want to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda with that. what's going on, rob? >> north and east bayhill tops this afternoon have had some pretty active showers. in fact some thunder earlier that got really intense around fairfield and vacaville. you can see the hail showing up as the heavier line of thundershowers went through with rain around napa. same story off to the east around mt. diablo. we did have the showers fire up around the east bayhill tops east of 680 this afternoon. san jose, san francisco and oakland not bad. we've got all the clouds out there, but not a lot of rain falling underneath. but that is likely to change a little later on in evening. remember that low which has been spinning around offshore? it is now crossing the central coast tonight. and with it, especially for areas south of san jose and in the east bay hills we'll see more lift to the moisture outside which equals more showers and possibly even some thunder in a few spots tonight. we'll walk you through the details of the forecast heading back to the workweek in a few minutes. diane? >> all right, thanks, rob. coming up next at 5:00, scientists in germany say they have narrowed the source of that deadly e. coli outbreak. but what is strange is the vegetable they're now blaming isn't one most people reported eating. plus we'll show you what had thousands of people jumping off the deck of a ferry boat near alcatraz. it was all for fun. and the story of a teenaged al pe whole were banned from n headlines. we'll show you the turn of events this weekend. despite vows from israel to prevent a repeat of last month's deadly protest, israeli troops today opened fire on a crowd of demonstrators. at least 20 people were reportedly killed, and dozens more wounded. the pro palestinian demonstrators were trying to cross the boarder from syria into the israeli occupied golan heights. it's part of the demonstration's protesting the 1967 war in which israel won control of the west bank, east jerusalem, the golan heights, the gaza strip, and the sinai peninsula. israel accused syrian leaders of orchestrating this violence to draw attention away from its own deadly protests. researchers trying to pinpoint the source of that deadly e. coli outbreak in germany may know where at least some of the contamination originated. officials say bean sprouts grown in northern germany are a significant source of the new drug-resistant strain of e. coli. the company supplied many of the restaurants and markets where the bacteria was found. but experts stress that the sprouts can't be entirely to blame. most of those who ended up sick ate raw lettuce, tomatoes or cucumbers. also now four more people have died, bringing the death toll to 22. and still to come at 5:00 -- >> never thought i would be riding in a limousine with a tv crew. i see a lot of kids, i don't know, puff daddy or something. >> one teenager's decision about the prom landed him on national television and in the headlines. so what did he do that caused him to be tan dhe,ce the dance, and then created 200,000 supporters on facebook? we'll show you, next. all right. get ready for some traffic changes overnight on highway 17 over the santa cruz mountains. today caltrans began working on a year and a half project to try to make the notoriously dangerous freeway a little bit safer. the $18 million project is happening between summit road and lexington reservoir. crews are expected to replace three miles of drains on the freeway that have been around since the 1940s. larger guardrails will be constructed along the highway, and new pavement should help drain water more quickly from the road as well. most of the work will be done overnight. and during that time, caltrans will close one direction of highway 17 and shift the traffic to the other side during the works. it will go from a four-lane divided highway to a two-lane roadway. prom night is usually a big deal in the life of any teenager. but for one young couple in connecticut, their date to the dance ended up making national headlines. nbc's john yang shows us how a romantic move backfired a month ago and led to a national campaign to let the two go to their school's prom. >> let's rock 'n roll! >> reporter: for james tate and sonali rodriguez, this is the prom night that almost wasn't. it all began when tate used foot-high cardboard letters to spell out his invitation on shelton high school itself. he says he thought it was a cool thing to do. the school head master thought it was a major infraction and banned him from the prom. >> has it all been positive, the reaction towards you? >> yeah, everyone has been really nice about it. >> reporter: it made national headlines and triggered a website and facebook campaign. tate even got support from a u.s. senator. >> the punishment has to fit the crime. >> reporter: finally, it was all too much for the head master. >> i never thought that such a decision would lead to international notoriety. >> reporter: after the usual struggle with even a pretied bow tie -- >> mother, can i get some help? >> reporter: and armed with a bouquet of flowers and a corsage, tate was off to meet his date and other friends. there was the usual round of picture-taking by proud parents. and then off to the prom in a stretch limo donated by a local car service. >> woo! >> reporter: not quite how they imagined this night going. >> i mean, it's a definitely different after everything that happened. >> i can't wait for everything to calm down. >> reporter: that's a sentiment shared by the head master. >> and we're ready to move on. it's all behind us now. >> reporter: what does tate say he learned about himself through all of this? >> i'm awkward. my voice is kind of weird. and that's about it. >> reporter: for now, like all seniors on prom night, it's a time to feel like they're in their own little fantasy world. >> never thought i would be riding in a limo with a tv crew. i feel like it's, i don't know, puff daddy or something. >> reporter: but in a few short hours, it will be back to reality. >> we have to work on our bio project. >> they got a good attitude about it. that was nbc's john yang reporting. if you think the weather has been odd lately, the bay area is not alone when it comes to unusual weather. a late spring heatwave set and broke records from baltimore to st. louis this weekend. in chicago a half marathon was actually stopped mid race due to the heat. and at least one runner died as well. dry, hot conditions in arizona are fueling wildfires burning near the new mexico border. and more than 2,000 people have been evacuated there. and in parts of north and south dakota, the swollen missouri river is flooding neighborhoods faster than they can fill the sandbags. of course here in the bay area records for rain were sated their weekend. and now meteorologist rob mayeda is here with a look at what is in store for the rest of the week for us. >> hello, diane. not quite done with the chance of showers or even the chance of thundershowers. in a few areas for this evening, right now looking at oakland, it's windy outside, 62 degrees. typically this time of year we should see highs in the 70s and 80s. inland today close to 70. the warmest places. so still unusually cool there you see san francisco and the clouds going from south to north around an area of low pressure off to our southwest. and right now in san jose, 63 degrees. a little breezy, though. northwest wind at 17. and it will be breezy for this evening as that low-pressure system starts to approach the coast and move over san luis obispo. well will see these locally breezy conditions for this evening. and probably for tonight. now in terms of the rain, most of it has been hanging out up towards the north and east bayhill tops. had some pretty intense thundershowers around vacaville. same story around the altimamont pass. we had briefly heavy showers. those have wound down. oakland and san jose have been relatively dry. be you can see offstore that same area of low pressure that threw all that heavy rain our way yesterday is now moving towards the coast. we're going to see increasing moisture approaching areas like san jose southward and around the east bayhill tops this evening that will increase our chance of seeing some showers showing up as we head through tonight. there you can see especially the east bayhill tops, seeing the best bet of showers and maybe some thunder as well. tomorrow morning still some isolated showers until that low scoots out of here, which probably won't happen until tomorrow afternoon. we will see showers shutting down by tomorrow evening. then this is the old-fashioned fog, which is typical used to see june around the coast that will start to move inland as with ehead into tomorrow night. rainfall totals likely highest around the tri-valley east and south of san jose as the moisture starts to swing inland tonight. we will see temperatures mostly 50s, scattered showers, and yes, the chance of isolated thunder. a little bit of that around mount diablo this afternoon. and may see more tonight. tomorrow's highs still pretty much where we were today. we'll see mid- to upper 60s in san jose. the average high should be 78. so just nowhere near that for tomorrow. with a chance of some scattered showers for your morning drive. probably not so much for the evening commute. towards the east bay, you can see the highs in the mid-60s. and also mid-60s around the north bay. so the seven-day forecast as that low finally gets out of here tuesday and wednesday. >> good! >> low 70s, real heatwave coming your way. compared to where things have been. that is an improvement from the way this weekend started. >> i'll take 73. that actually sounds very nice. thank you, rob. we've got laurence checking out the giants. >> trying to get back into first place just by themselves. they needed the diamondbacks to lose today. got a little then there too. another stellar outing for ryan vogelsong. this comeback story keeps getting better and better, while the a's try to avoid two straight sweeps from teams from the a.l. east. boston making things difficult at fenway. el e a n veestlr ever at roland garros. an outstanding french open final today in paris.t sports is next. and now the xfinity sports desk on nbc bay area news. >> good evening. the giants trying to take sole possession of first place. they will not see their division rivals the colorado rockies again until september. today the finale of this latest series. what can you say about ryan vogelsong other than really nice things. another very strong start. the lone mistake coming top phi on this chris iannetta solo shot, breaking a scoreless tie. the very next inning the giants get right back in it. freddy sanchez with the two-out single scoring andres torres to tie things at one. this game was getting going, and vogelsong was going strong. into the eighth inning, seven strikeouts today. and then torres, the lance to play hero. he comes up with a big hit in the bottom of the eighth. he brings home pinch runner emanuel burress for a run that brings home the win. vogelsong now 4-1. manager bruce bochy saying afterwards his spot in the rotation very secure. the giants win, 2-1, plus get some help from the team they host tomorrow, the washington nationals beating arizona. just moments ago. so the giants alone in first again. >> i don't think i'm pitching this good without them behind me. it definitely helps for sure. you know, if you're struggling and the fans aren't behind you, you're probably going to do worse. but it's awesome. it's awesome. i mean, i keep saying this. it's the best thing you could ever experience. i wish everyone could have the chance to experience what i'm going through right now. it's awesome. >> good stuff from vogelsong today. all right. the a's trying to avoid a second straight sweep, getting all kinds of trouble from the a.l. east this week. this afternoon in boston not much better. brett anderson trying to get out of fenway with a win. but the red sox making things very difficult for him. bottom two, and carl crawford getting to anderson with two on for a three-run shot to right here. but oakland was able to chip away just a bit at the boston lead. top three, kevin kouzmanoff. it's kouzmanoff's fourth of the season. derek barton would add few rbi hits. for the most par it was all boston today. adrian gonzalez doing more damage with a two-run shot that gets to top of the green monster. the red sox beating the a's-3. next up for oakland, a three-game set in baltimore starting tomorrow. later this month, the final weekend of june, nascar will be at the infineon raceway in
