Luther College chapter of Society of Physics Students receives national award Search: April 16, 2021 The Luther College chapter of the national Society of Physics Students has received the 2020 Outstanding Chapter Award. This is the highest award, granted to only 15% of chapters annually, and recognizes Luther s chapter for its involvement and outreach on campus and in the larger SPS community. SPS is a way for students who are interested in physics and engineering to get together and have fun doing small construction projects and design competitions, said Erin Flater, Luther College professor of physics and SPS advisor. It s also a chance to learn more about physics, about summer research and internship opportunities, and about what scientists and engineers do in their careers. ....

Mon, 03/15/2021 LAWRENCE Four University of Kansas students who have been actively involved in undergraduate research during their university careers are competing for Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships, regarded as the premier undergraduate award to encourage excellence in science, engineering and mathematics. The students’ applications are coordinated by the Office of Fellowships in Undergraduate Studies. KU’s nominees: Emma Cosner, a junior majoring in chemistry and minoring in physics Mary Sevart, a sophomore majoring in chemical engineering Jonah Stiel, a junior majoring in chemistry. Sixty-eight KU students have received Goldwater scholarships since they first were awarded in 1989. Congress established the program in 1986 in tribute to the retired U.S. senator from Arizona and to ensure a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers. ....

This is the fifteenth time the Sigma Pi Sigma chapter has been recognized for its excellence as a top-tier student-led physical sciences organization since it was established in 1968, a designation given to fewer than 10 percent of all SPS chapters at colleges and universities in the United States and internationally. ....
