DA crafts strategy plan for hybrid rice production

File photo MANILA - The Department of Agriculture (DA) is crafting a strategy plan for the local production of hybrid rice to increase crop yields in the country and make it rice self-sufficient in two years. This was after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who concurrently heads the DA, sought the implementation of a program that would promote the use of hybrid rice varieties in the country to help local farmers boost their crop production. In a briefing on Thursday, DA Assistant Secretary for Operations Arnel de Mesa said the strategy plan would promote the planting of hybrid seeds on 1.5 million hectares of rice land during the dry season. De Mesa said the DA is looking at expanding the production of hybrid rice into Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Soccsksargen, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Ballots printed for Dec. 2022 BSKE to be used for Oct. 30 polls

MANILA - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it would use the ballots printed for the Dec. 5, 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) for the polls reset to Oct. 30 this year. Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco, in a statement Friday, said the Commission en banc has approved the use of these ballots for six regions and one province. Printing of over 90M BSKE ballots 50% completed: Comelec

MANILA - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday said it has printed over 50 percent of the more than 90 million officials' ballots for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), with over eight months before the polls. Based on the poll body's data, a total of 45,373,628 ballots have been printed by the National Printing Office (NPO) out of a total of 90,613,426 ballots. Of the number, a total of 32,975,599 ballots have been printed of the 66,973,949 ballots required for the village polls. Meanwhile, the Commission said a total of 12,398,029 out of the 23,639,477 ballots for the SK polls have already been printed. PH logs 924 new cases of Omicron subvariants

MANILA - The Department of Health (DOH) has detected 924 new cases of the highly-transmissible Omicron subvariants. In its latest Covid-19 biosurveillance report, the agency noted that there were 1,078 samples sequenced by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and the University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center on Jan. 28 to Feb. 3. Out of the total samples, 454 or 42.12 percent were classified as BA.2.3.20; 196 or 18.18 percent as XBB (including one case of XBB.1.5; 79 or 7.33 percent as XBC; 28 or 2.60 percent as BA.5 (including six cases classified as BQ.1); seven or 0.65 percent as BA.2.75 (including three cases classified as CH.1.1 and three cases classified as BN.1); and 160 or 14.84 percent as other Omicron sublineages.
