After second attack, Catanzaros' dog ordered put down


NORTH PROVIDENCE – The family dog of the well-known Catanzaro family has been declared vicious and ordered to be euthanized after it attacked a second neighborhood dog and badly injured it.
The attacking dog, co-owned by Madisson Catanzaro, daughter of former Fire Chief Steven Catanzaro and former mayoral candidate and Town Council President Kristen Catanzaro, had been alleged to have behaved in a vicious or terrorizing manner on April 26 after it broke through a fence at 6 Gardner Ave. that hadn’t been properly secured and attacked another dog in the yard behind at 11 Observatory Ave., severely injuring it.
The panel that decided the dog’s fate on May 13 was made up of Special Agent Earl Newman, of the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as chairman, Lt. Michael Tavarozzi, of the North Providence Police Department, and Animal Control Officer Robert Salisbury, of the Smithfield Police Department. ....

Man charged with punching teenage Walmart employee after mask request


NORTH SMITHFIELD – Police have arrested a man for allegedly punching a teenage Walmart employee who asked him to put a mask on his toddler.
Michael Caro, 34, of Woonsocket has been charged with simple assault and battery and disorderly conduct. According to North Smithfield Police, Caro turned himself in after police learned his identity and contacted him.
Police said they responded to the Dowling Village Walmart on April 20 after reports a juvenile employee had been assaulted. According to police, the employee got into a confrontation with the suspect when he asked him to put a mask on his toddler. When the employee walked away to get a manager, the suspect allegedly put him in a choke hold and punched him. The employee did not seek medical treatment, but had a bruise and was in pain, according to police. ....

Devon Scott Thornock, 39, pleaded not guilty to a single count of second-degree aggravated assault after being bound over for trial on Monday.
Thornock appeared in 1st District Court via video call from the Utah State Prison for a preliminary hearing, where Cache County prosecutors presented testimony from the alleged victim and a responding officer.
The alleged victim — age 55 at the time of the incident — told the court he was in a carport with friends when he bent down to pick something off the ground and received a blow to the side of the head. The alleged victim told the court he did not see who struck him or what he was hit with, but doctors confirmed “it wasn’t with a fist.” According to testimony, a hammer was found on the ground and a witness to the incident confirmed Thornock as the perpetrator though the alleged victim could not positively identify him. ....

One year on from the siege that left his nephew fatally shot by Queensland Police, Malcolm Vignes doesn t like to get lost in what ifs and what might have beens.
All he knows for certain is that Khrys is gone and he misses him.
I still think he s going to walk through the door like nothing has happened, Mr Vignes said.
As events in Smithfield played out on March 29 last year, Mr Vignes had a nagging feeling that Khrys was in trouble.
