Over the next hour we will have the opportunity to learn more of the nations fifth president and a member of the socalled virginia dynasty that dominated american politics and the revolution well into the 19th century. In a few moments i will be talking with historian tim mcgrath about his new book james monroe a life which you can see here. But first we have a special guest will introduce us. The executive director james monroe highland and Research Professor of anthropology at the college of william and mary and also a seasoned veteran of archaeological expeditions in the United States and europe including monticello and is the codirector of the angloamerican project the First International team to excavate the city after it reopened when researchers in the 1990s which we should totally
Partly in its genesis, hardly the kind of questions that arose, which for me, gave the book a kind of larger scope than i had originally intended. The quotations in the book, the slogans and catch phrases, up until 1955, were easy for me to remember. Because im a child of the 40s and thats what i learned in school. And thats how we learned history in school. Either the books we took out of the library in fourth and fifth grade or the way history was taught. But when i got to graduate school in the 60s, i discovered that some of my fellow students who were, who came from overseas, would come to me periodically and said who is this joe and why should he say it aint so . And so, i told him the story. And later, a friend of hour ours whos an immigrant doctor from south africa came to me and said why do my patients when they see me say whats up doc and laugh ma maniacally sm people who were under 30 had no idea anymore of what these slogans and catch phrases meant. Some have commented about our use of the civil war and using 50 objects while the emotional history seen through objects takes in the totality of the context of the war, it doesnt really consider the military history or sequence of battle. So its related to the soldiers who served, the leaders who helped or hindered the union war effort. The relics they brought back from battle. I think sort of along the way here over these last seven weeks we touched on battles. Those who have experienced them and certainly the battle for new york city because early on we dealt with the draft riots, which almost constituted a battle. Indeed, indeed. Adults have to wear masks at elementary schools, but student wont be required to. In middle and high schools, they will need face coverings on all the time. Social distancing will be required in aull classes. This is public and private schools. And it will be up to individual School Districts as to when and how they reopen. Oakland parents were asked last month to way eigh in on th kind of instruction they would like to see and results of that survey have been released. Lyanne melendez got a look at what parents are asking for. Reporter 4500 families participated in the survey offered by the Oakland Unified School district. Parents were asked how should the district reopen in the fall. A nonprofit helped with the survey. They want more regular communication with their teacher, they want more instructional minutes with their teacher. And they want more small group and one to one instruction in particular. This is a neighborhood that has been occupied for weeks by protest ertz. Th you can see that officers there, it doesnt look like they are having a lot of interaction with the protesters, but they definitely have a strong presence in that area. The Police Department says that they were acting on an executive order from the mayor of seattle. The Mayors Office says the city had to do something to address the violence in the area. C. H. O. P.
