Back in the 1980s from the original founders of the descendents association, and i guess it stopped for a while, so i decided to start it up again. And i was reading the book, the slaveship clotilda and the makers of africa town. That is how i came up with the title. I was looking for a title, but you know, a lot of things were not ringing a bell. When i was reading her book, i was like oh wow, our ancestors just jumped at me. You greeted everyone and there was a point where you had descendents speak. How did you come up with your program . Well, growing up here in africa town and attending the missionary baptist church, there was a bust of cudgel lewis in front of our church all of my life, and back in 2002 that bust was destroyed by some kids acting up, and they decided to vandalize, and later, they put up a Historical Marker, and this Historical Marker had the founders of Union Baptist church, and there were several names on there, and growing up, i always heard about cudgel lewis,

Finley describing how African Americans established businesses on the north side of town. This is the first African American mortuary in the state of alabama. They originally opened in 1880s. They built this building in the 1900s. But the real story is mrs. Allen. She started a private school directly behind us in the 1880s. It was called the Josephine Allen institute. Because in the 1800s before the emancipation proclamation, it was against the law for africanamericans to be educated. After the emancipation proclamation, schools started opening everywhere. She opened one to educate young africanamericans. This family actually came to mobile, from virginia. They were never slaves, they were elite. T

The premise of this course is the idea that you must understand women reformers in the context of their day. So i am going to trace her personal context, which is important, she was a quaker and i will talk about what that means, but also her social context, social, political and religious contexts, the things that were going on around her. Argument, the second great awakening which i have mentioned, was a part of what helped to radicalize her contributed to effectiveness. So both her personal and social contexts are part of this. And i want you to see this as modeling for your own thinking about your own reformers. Each of you is working on a you tor, and i weigh what is in her personal context as a reformer and in her larger context that shapes are issues and effectiveness. Think about it on both those levels.
