american democracy her most recent book which just came out is called vanguard. how black women overcame barriers won the vote and insisted on equality for all this book is fascinating you have to you have to get it it starts with dr. jones s grandmother susie jones and i must admit i haven t finished the book. but it has amazing stories of of women who really have made a difference and we look forward dr. jones to hearing your story. so let me just tell you a little bit about dr. jones. she was born in central harlem and was originally trained as an attorney and was working on social justice issues after being trained at in new york. and so at the q&a law school she became a public interest lawyer and spent nearly 10 years representing homeless people people with mental illness women living with aids and in 1994. she was awarded a charles refson fellowship on the future of the city of new york at columbia university based on her lawyering work. and there her career took an i

alerance, temperance, and number of other social causes of her day. i am going to talk about her, but i am doing a couple other things for you. the premise of this course is the idea that you must understand women reformers in the context of their day. so i am going to trace her personal context, which is important, she was a quaker and i will talk about what that means, but also her social context, social, political and religious contexts, the things that were going on around her. argument, the second great awakening which i have mentioned, was a part of what helped to radicalize her contributed to effectiveness. so both her personal and social contexts are part of this. and i want you to see this as modeling for your own thinking about your own reformers. each of you is working on a you tor, and i weigh what is in her personal context as a reformer and in her larger context that shapes are issues and effectiveness. think about it on both those levels. ok. so in order to und
[video clip] my mother was a college student, student of international affairs who took a an interest in public issues. she could not vote yet that tenant farmers on our farm, some of whom were illiterate could vote. host: who was harry byrne and why does he play a central role in your story? guest: harry thomas byrne was the youngest legislator in the tennessee general assembly in 1920. he was a freshman delegate. he was up for reelection in the fall. he represented a small hill town in east tennessee, the republican part of tennessee. and he, although he voted with the anti-suffragists and the nt anti-ratificationists from the 19th amendment, was upper was up for ratification and that tennessee general assembly that summer, he changed his mind because of a letter he received from his mother we described in that clip. that changed the mind, tilted the vote by one vote and that is how the 19th amendment was finally ratified. host: how did the vote for ratification of th
