The Pennsylvania Turnpike needs widened around the Allegheny Tunnel.

Road construction in Somerset County the recent completion of Route 219 from Somerset to Meyersdale, for instance is typically celebrated. But a Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission proposal to bypass the nearly mile-long Allegheny Tunnel with about 4 miles of highway in Allegheny and Stonycreek townships is drawing concern from local outdoors groups, the county commissioners and other residents. They said that unlike Route 219, the tunnel bypass project is an unneeded, costly project that will hurt the environment and create a driving hazard. Turnpike officials, after decades of studying the proposal, said that eliminating the tunnel is the best option. It will save money over time and create a safer travel lane, they said. It’s part of a disagreement between the two sides about travel safety, land erosion and even the weather.
