A case was filed in connection with the speedboat accident that killed 26 people, crashing into a sand-laden bulk carrier in the Padma river in Madaripur.
Naval police filed the case with Shibchar Police Station early today accusing four people, reports our Faridpur correspondent quoting Miraj Hosen, officer-in-charge of the police station. ....

Police have filed a case over the accident between a speedboat and a sand carrier on the Padma River in Madaripur’s Kathalbari that resulted in the deaths of 26 people.

Four people, including the driver of the speedboat and its owner, were named in the case filed on Monday, said Shibchar Police Station chief Miraz Hossain.
The case was filed by SI Lokman Hossain of the Kathalbari Port Marine Police Outpost.
The accused have been identified as speedboat owners Kandu Molla and Zahirul Islam, driver Shah Alam and Shimulia port leaseholder Shah Alam Akon. A few other unnamed individuals were also accused in the case. ....

Speedboats unregulated for decade
Right under the authorities noses, unskilled drivers have been operating unregistered speedboats on the Padma s Shimulia-Bangla Bazar route for over a decade.
The issue has come into the limelight after one such motorboat crashed into a sand-laden bulk carrier near Bangla Bazar Ferry Ghat in Madaripur s Shibchar upazila on Monday morning, leaving 26 passengers, including women and children, dead.
Sources in the Shimulia Ferry Terminal in Munshiganj said around 400 speedboats are operated on the route, flouting the safety rules.
Only a few of them have registrations while the rest are operating illegally, said an official of the Department of Shipping (DoS), a government body authorised to regulate the country s water transports. ....
