Speedboat crash in Padma: Case filed against owner, 3 others
A case has been filed against four people over the Speedboat crash in the Padma River near Banglabazar Ferry Ghat in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur that killed 26 people on Monday.
Sub-inspector of Kathalbari Naval Police Outpost Lokman Hossain filed the case with Shibchar police station on Tuesday morning.
The accused in the case are speedboat driver Shah Alam, owners-Malik Chandu and Rezaul and ghat leaseholder Shah Aalm Khan.
Officer-in-charge of Naval Police Abdur Razzak confirmed the news.
Meanwhile, injured driver Shah Alam was admitted to Shibchar Health Complex and later shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital on Monday evening with police guard as his condition deteriorated. ....

In the early hours of Monday morning, when most of us were tucked comfortably in our beds, eight-year-old Meem lost her entire family after the speedboat she was on crashed and overturned in the middle of the Padma river, drowning and killing 26 passengers.

Right under the authorities noses, unskilled drivers have been operating unregistered speedboats on the Padma s Shimulia-Bangla Bazar route for over a decade.
The issue has come into the limelight after one such motorboat crashed into a sand-laden bulk carrier near Bangla Bazar Ferry Ghat in Madaripur s Shibchar upazila on Monday morning, leaving 26 passengers, including women and children, dead.
Sources in the Shimulia Ferry Terminal in Munshiganj said around 400 speedboats are operated on the route, flouting the safety rules.
Only a few of them have registrations while the rest are operating illegally, said an official of the Department of Shipping (DoS), a government body authorised to regulate the country s water transports. ....

At least 26 people were killed as a speedboat overturned after hitting a sand-laden bulkhead anchored in Padma in Madaripur s Shibchar upazila this morning.
One of the deceased was identified as Taher Ali (35), a resident of Rajor upazila in Madaripur, reports our Faripur correspondent.
Five people were rescued alive. They were taken to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex.
The accident occurred near old terminal at Kathalbari, one kilometre off Banglabazar Ferry Ghat area, around 7:00am.

In total, 26 bodies were recovered from the Padma river so far, said Ashiqur Rahman, inspector of Banglabazar Ferry Ghat Traffic Police. ....
