Well, it s the most disturbing story you will probably hear all day. new video he from inside the memphis v.a. shows hospital workers leaving paralyzed veterans abandoned sometimes for hours at a time. this happens every day. no one is here to us. if something happened, we are screwed. front desk area, no one attending at all. joining us now with his reaction is the executive deputy director of paralyzed veterans. himself a former marine as well. sherman guilliams jr. thank you for joining us. good morning, pete. good to see you again. thank you. you spend your life advocating on behalf of paralyzed veterans. why does something like this happen? it speaks to a few concerns. number one, the reality is paralyzed veterans are living longer are. and when that with that comes the opportunity for v.a. to examine whether it needs to right size the way it staffs these hospitals, the way it staffs the spinal cord injury centers. ....
In this case we are looking at one example of where a veteran with needs, needed to have someone at the bedside a little bit more frequently than at times past. this happens at spinal cord injury centers across the country. trying to determine how we in fact need to right size the staffing at the v.a. americans. you mentioned the v.a. a couple of times. we asked the v.a. for a statement. they provided one. they said in response to this oftentimes when staff are working at the bedside with patients, it might appear that no one is at the nurse s station. the assistive call button is at the bedside for patient to alert staff if there is need for assistance. do you think, sherman, is this a memphis thing or v.a. system thing? there has been a lot of criticism of both this facility but also v.a. health care generally. which is it in this case? well, i think it s worth mentioning that this video was shot in july. since that time, we did advocate for the memphis leadership to make ....
Adjustments and they did send in a new team of clinics to take a look at this problem. it s been in the works and getting resolved. but it is symptomatic of something that s been probably happening in v.a. far too long. and that s understaffing. and we heard deputy secretary sloan talk about managing to a budget instead of the requirement. i think at this point they are just now understanding that you have to manage to what s needed. take look at demand and determine what s needed and memphis, because it got this attention, i hope it will speak to the bigger, bigger solution. sherman, the video itself speaks for itself, obviously the need to take it, these veterans felt like they weren t being treated the way that they should. do you know if anyone has been held accountable here in memphis? do you think someone should be held accountable? we have heard about the difficulties of holding anybody accountable? can anybody be held ....
