take a look. this is actually what it looked like right where i m standing earlier today, as the worst of the wind hit. you can see the awning, there it is. and that is it tipping over. here in perry, it was a wind and a rain storm. along the gulf coast, though, it was all about the storm surge. a surge not seen in a lifetime. this is alexis de leone and, yes, where she was in the hometown, she had recently returned to, swimming down the street was how she ended up getting around. alexis will join us shortly. we are also going to speak to a resident of another hurricane hit area, the barrier island of cedar key. a man who told us last night, he was saying in part to help any neighbors who were hunkering down. and in a moment, the latest on where idalia is right now, where it s going, and who is at risk. first, though, the scope of it all so far from our randi kaye. keaton beach, florida, in the bull s-eye of idalia. just look at what is left of this home in keaton b ....
coast as a category three, just three hours from now. evacuations are underway in at least 28 counties. mayors, officials, the governor all warning people in those targets zones to take cover or leave immediately. that includes people in cedar key and big band. one of the greatest threats, of course, is the storm surge. it s expected to reach once in a lifetime levels for this part of florida. cnn s live up and down the coast, including in tampa and steinhatchee. we will speak live with some storm changes storm chasers in the heart of the bull s-eye, also officials warn that time is running out to evacuate. first let s get straight to chad myers with this new forecast. chad, what is the path of hurricane idalia at this hour? still straight up to the north and likely just to the east of tallahassee as it continues to the north overnight. now the hurricane center will be putting out updates once per hour, not every three hours, so that is some excellent news for us here ....
our coverage continues today of storm idalia. that s the storm that s wreaking havoc across large sections of the country tonight. i am abby phillip. and right now, idalia is a tropical storm after making landfall as a hurricane. the storms rain is now covering four states, stretching 600 miles from florida all the way up to north carolina. and that wind is now impacting half of that area. now, the danger remains as idalia continues to move north into the carolinas this hour. and the record storm surge threatens communities in those areas. now, homes are still underwater. and some of the damage is catastrophic. cnn s live across the southeast, including in charleston, where there are reports tonight of flooding right in the city center. we will go right there in a moment. but i want to start first with our meteorologist chad myers. he s over in the cnn weather center. chad, what is the condition right now of this storm? and where is it headed? we are losing some win ....
