But i had a wonderful professor at Columbia Law School who later moved to stanford, jerry gunther. He was in charge of getting clerkships for columbia students, and he called every federal judge on the Second Circuit, in the southern, eastern districts of new york, and he was not meeting with success. So he called a columbia graduate, judge edmund palmieri, who was a columbia undergraduate, Columbia Law School graduate and always took his clerks from columbia. And he said i strongly recommend that you engage ruth Bader Ginsburg. And palmieris response was ive had women law clerks, i know theyre okay, but shes a mother, and sometimes we have to work on weekends, even on a sunday. So professor gunther said give her a chance, and if she doesnt work out, a you ....
The beginning of the conference. My name is seth i teach history at the university. And im here to proceed over this panel. Talking about the 1790s then and now thinking about the relationship between the particularly fragile moment in american political history which was the 1790s. And how we might think about what we can learn from that moment and how it connects or maybe it doesnt connect to whats happening in american political history at this moment. So the way this is going to work is ill introduce the four panelists. Each person will talk for five to seven minutes or so and develop a few lines of inquiry. Ill ask a few questions based upon what people have said. And folks will have a chance to have a conversation here. But then we want to leave the last at least 45 or 30 minutes for questions from the audience. So as we go on, please have in mind things that you want to say or things you want to ask about. All right. So i want to introduce folks from my left to my right. So firs ....

Today. We are shifting the direction of our course today. We are moving away from catholics and in particular the jesuits. We spent a lot of time talking about the jesuits in this course. We are going to be moving toward the protestants. We will be looking at some of the missionary efforts in the work they did. In particular today, we are looking at their work in early new england. One thing i want you to think about for seminar is this really critical question. You have basically done a whole crash course in jesuit missionary work for the last four weeks. So think about this. I think about some of the texts we have read and the work weve gone through. We did a week on Spanish Missions in south america, we did some work with jesuit relations and watched black robe. Then we did the novel, silence, and the adaptation of the novel into a film. We have been in south america, new france, japan, weve been doing this for about four wee ....
