CSPAN3 Lectures In History Abraham Lincoln And Native Americans July 14, 2024

Many of you probably dont think of late Abraham Lincoln in terms of american or indigenous history. Abraham lincoln had a lot on his plate. When he was president , the civil war and that dominated most of his attention. Underneath the surface, important events involving American Indians, events that one might argue make Abraham Lincoln a bit more of a problematic figure than he ordinarily was. What we may call the dakota war of 1862 occurred. It was drenched in blood as impoverished and hungry dakota waged war on settlers and faced the wrath of whites. Tried, convicted, and sentenced to death, 303 men. Lincoln commuted the sentence of most of these individuals but in the end 38 were hung in what remains americas largest max mass execution. They were made to enter the long walk, a forced journey of hundreds of miles fr ....

CSPAN3 Lectures In History Early English Missions In Colonial America July 14, 2024

Today. We are shifting the direction of our course today. We are moving away from catholics and in particular the jesuits. We spent a lot of time talking about the jesuits in this course. We are going to be moving toward the protestants. We will be looking at some of the missionary efforts in the work they did. In particular today, we are looking at their work in early new england. One thing i want you to think about for seminar is this really critical question. You have basically done a whole crash course in jesuit missionary work for the last four weeks. So think about this. I think about some of the texts we have read and the work weve gone through. We did a week on Spanish Missions in south america, we did some work with jesuit relations and watched black robe. Then we did the novel, silence, and the adaptation of the novel into a film. We have been in south america, new france, japan, weve been doing this for about four wee ....

Missionary work for the last four weeks. Think about this. Think about the texts we have read and the work we have gone through. Spanish work on missions in south america by looking at we did work with jesuit relations. The we did the novel and adaptation of the novel into a film. We have been into south america, france, japan. We have been doing this for weeks. The question maybe we can start our seminars off with this thursday is why . Why do we spend so much time talking about the jesuits . I have my own reasons and answers to that. I would like you to develop them. May write that down and make a note to yourself. Why are we spending so much time writing but the jesuits . It is something we can start the conversation off with. One of the things i should say as a way to segue into this discussion of i will come back to that. Really do inform and shape Protestant Missionary work in important ways. You guys probably know th ....

CSPAN3 History Bookshelf Ann Hagedorn Savage Peace July 14, 2024

Reader and for obvious reasons, i feel very passionate about history, i think we need to be able to look through the lens of history at times that are similar to the times we are living in. We need to learn about people in our country who can be models for us all. History is obviously important, but i believe it has to be accessible way without dumbing it down or without lowering the standards for research or accuracy. So dont forget to read my source notes. I find source notes really grueling and so i always tell the audiences please read my source notes because i have spent so much time on them but in all seriousness, that is my quest. I want to entertain, but at the same time to deliver a very important story. And in order for me to get interested in the topic, it has to be really significant. It has to include things that i think will help us learn about ourselves and about our country. And another qualification for me is that it really has to be something that maybe has been swall ....
