Valley mourns boxing champ Hagler, dead at 66

CONWAY — Retired middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler, who died last Saturday at his Bartlett home at age 66, was remembered as one of the valley’s own after the famous boxer first started coming here in the early 1980s, then bought a home in Bartlett in 1985. “As far as I’m concerned, he was the valley’s celebrity,” is how Terry O’Brien, co-owner of the Red Parka Steakhouse and Pub in Glen, summed up Hagler. Bartlett Police Chief Christopher Keaton said police logs show that Hagler was transported by Bartlett-Jackson Ambulance Services from his home near Attitash to North Conway’s Memorial Hospital on Friday evening.

Local restaurants reopening after COVID

The pandemic hit home on the local restaurant front with a vengeance last week, forcing several establishments to close temporarily and visitors. Among eateries posting they were closed due to COVID but would reopen soon after cleaning and quarantining were Moat Mountain Smokehouse & Tavern in North Conway; Sunrise Shack in Glen; Horsefeathers Restaurant in North Conway; May Kelly’s Cottage in North Conway; Wildcat Tavern in Jackson; Fiesta Jalisco’s Mexican restaurant in North Conway; and Tuckerman Restaurant and Tavern in Intervale. The Sunrise Shack, a breakfast eatery that had set up outdoor picnic tables last summer to increase its seating, posted on Facebook on Jan. 19: “Here’s the post that you hope not to have to write … Out of an abundance of caution, The Shack is going to shut down starting tomorrow due a COVID exposure. We’re hopeful that this shutdown will be limited to a week.”
