Nirapad Sarak Chai today protested and condemned the alleged threat of boycotting its chairman Ilias Kanchan that transport leader and lawmaker Shajahan Khan made yesterday.
Shajahan Khan, acting president of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation, at a programme of the federation s Rajshahi regional committee yesterday made indecent and false comments against Ilias Kanchan, said the platform campaigning for road safety in a statement today.
Besides, Shajahan, also a ruling party lawmaker, threatened to boycott the actor turned road safety crusader, reads the statement. ....

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour and Employment Ministry on Thursday recommended making the closed state-owned jute mills functional through modernisation with local and foreign financing.
The parliamentary panel requested the government to take necessary steps in this regard, said an official release of the Parliament Secretariat.
It also suggested taking effective steps to revive the state-owned Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) and make it a profitable organisation.
At the meeting, the committee also recommended providing overall cooperation to the workers of the closed jute mills in amending their national identity card and paying all the dues of the terminated workers by withdrawing or settling the cases on an emergency basis. ....

Curbing Road Crashes: Govt steps confined to talks, committees

The committees make similar recommendations time and again, but those are hardly implemented.
In the meantime, road crashes continue to take a heavy toll on lives and properties.
Experts made the observation while talking to The Daily Star yesterday after a taskforce, formed for the government cause, held a closed-door meeting to discuss recommendations by four sub-committees.
After the meeting, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told reporters, The four sub-committees made recommendations on implementing 111 recommendations [given by a committee] on curbing road crashes and bringing discipline in the transport sector. We have discussed those. We will hold more discussions in the next meeting. ....

The ceremonial 31 gun salutes heralded the day as troops fired artillery shots from the National Parade Square while President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to Liberation War Martyrs.
Military secretaries to the President and the Premier placed wreaths on their behalf at the National Memorial at suburban Savar in the early morning ceremony while the COVID 19 prevented their physical presence at the scene. ....
