Use of quality bitumen a must to improve road durability Staff Correspondent 22nd May, 2021 10:57:25 Experts have suggested ensuring the use of quality bitumen in road construction to help improve the durability and longevity of roads and highways. As Bangladesh is largely dependent on imported bitumen, they also opined for a thorough quality assessment of the imported bitumen products. Dr Shamsul Hoque, a public transport expert and professor of the Department of Civil Engineering at BUET, observed that most of the roads in Bangladesh have been built using imported bitumen and do not last long due to various reasons. “Only the use of quality bitumen can ensure the durability and longevity of roads. Low-quality bitumen makes roads prone to damages sooner than the expected timeframe,” he added. ....

No quality test for imported bitumen! Staff Correspondent 17th May, 2021 10:42:29 In absence of proper testing of imported bitumen, low-quality bitumen is entering the country and consequently being used in road construction. It has been learnt that imported bitumen is entering the country without any certification and approval from Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Bangladesh is mostly dependent on imported bitumen. The country imports 80 per cent of its total bitumen demand while state-owned Eastern Refinery produces the rest 20 per cent. The entire volume of imported bitumen enters the country just only based on the import orders through the Customs. ....
