Bus shelter vandalism 'doubles during pandemic'

×
INCIDENTS of ‘mindless vandalism’ to bus shelters leading to costly repairs have more than doubled since lockdown, the Chronicle can reveal.
Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request to South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) show that since 2019 there have been 417 reports of vandalism to bus shelters on Barnsley’s road network.
In 2018-19, contractors called out to repair any of SYPTE’s 591 shelters logged 74 occasions where the cause of the damage was thought to be vandalism.
The following year, that figure ballooned to 215 incidents amid a general increase in call-outs to repair shelter glazing, from 92 to 414.
These range from weather damage - the borough was hit by severe flooding in November 2019 and the following January - road traffic collisions, and general wear and tear, as well as improvement works to existing furniture. ....

Fury over miners' wheel's treatment by housing developer

GRIMETHORPE residents were left outraged this week after finding one of the village’s mining memorials - which was supposed to be kept in safe storage - left in shrubbery behind a housing development site.
The pit wheel, which was situated on the former Willowgarth High School site on Brierley Road, was removed by housing developer Saul Homes three years ago to make way for a 97-home estate.
However last weekend, the pit wheel was found by residents behind the barriers of the site, covered in grass and overgrown plants.
Arthur Whittaker, 82, is an ex-miner and one of the residents who helped initially place the pit wheel on its plinth. ....

Fly-tipping fine issued to couple

×
A COUPLE have been hit with a hefty fine for dumping rubbish - after waste recovered by council officers contained their names and address.
Numerous bags of rubbish and household items were left abandoned at Sandy Bridge Lane, Shafton.
However, enforcement officers - who sifted through the waste on the hunt for evidence - found letters which led them to the unnamed pair.
This led to to a £400 fine and a fresh warning from the council that fly-tipping will not be tolerated after last year saw a rise of more than 1,000 incidents - to 5,254 - from the previous year’s figure of just over 4,000. ....
