OAKLAND, Calif. - Gregory Jacobs, better known under the rap moniker Shock G and frontman of the group Digital Underground, has died, according to his bandmate. He was 57.
Chopmaster J broke the news of Shock G s passing on Instagram Thursday evening. He wrote, 34 years ago almost to the day we had a wild idea we can be a hip hop band and take on the world through it all the dream became a reality and the reality became a nightmare for some. In a month that has found the hip-hop community wrecked with the losses of Prince Markie Dee of The Fat Boys, DMX, Black Rob Shock G, the co-founder of Digital Underground, has died at the age of 57.
The rapper, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, born Gregory Jacobs, was found lifeless in a hotel room in Tampa, Florida. According to a statement from Jacobs’ father, Edward Racker, made to TMZ, no cause of death has been determined yet and authorities will conduct an autopsy soon. ....

Shock G, emcee, producer, and co-founder of the ’90s hip-hop group Digital Underground, has died, according to an Instagram post by the group’s Chopmaster J and TMZ. “34 years ago almost to the day we had a wild idea we can be a hip hop band and take on the world through it all the dream became a reality and the reality became a nightmare for some,” Chopmaster J wrote. “Long live shock G Aka Humpty Hump.” Find his full post below. Shock G has died. Also known to the world as Humpty (pronounced with an “umpty’), by his birth name Gregory Jacobs, or simply as the mastermind behind formative rap group Digital Underground, Shock G left his stamp on the world of music, both through his own songs, and through his extensive production work most notably helping to launch the career of Digital Underground member Tupac Shakur.
