To lead this session, we have called on one of the most distinguished military historians that were very fortunate to have right up the road here at the university of new orleans, dr. Allan millett. His career has not only filled he hasokshelves, but also fill the ranks of military history phds by overseeing the most doctoral candidates of anyone in the country. Its hard not to find one of his students around. To talk about one of the most important battles in june of 1944 and the war as a whole, its my pleasure to call on dr. How many of you have been to vicksburg . I figured that. A good number of you. Champion hill is one of those great battlefields, if you have been watching the news, listening to the American Battlefield trust, they are doing a lot of work there. The state of mississippi has just turned over several Hundred Acres to the national park. Ervice a lot going on at Champion Hill. We are going to talk about that battle in particular. The larger Vicksburg Campaign just a little bit. I do not have powerpoint either. I am a little oldfashioned. We do have a map, which we will talk about a little bit. Johnson is the president identified with the vietnam war, although there is a famous quote from october 13, 1967 where he said to a journalist, this is not Lyndon Johnsons war. This is americas war. If i drop dead tomorrow, this war still be here. He was right. But the way it was fought has been ascribed to Lyndon Johnson. It is considered his tragedy, failure, the trail, depending on your position of the spectrum. There are two books both entitled Lyndon Johnsons war, and both advancing compelling if contradictory analyses of the reasons behind the series of decisions made between 1964 and 1868 that led to justification for escalating the war, the gulf incident of 1964, the first landing of u. S. Combat troops to defend the base in 1965, the stepped up escalation of forces in the country over the next two years until the total was greater than half a million men, the changeover from based security to enclave security, to finally what was called
