The Top 100 Albums Of 2020 (#20-1): Run the Jewels, Dua Lipa, Bob Dylan, More

Disclaimer:
I am only one man with limited time and, in 2020, I undertook a law conversion (hence the drop of in features in the winter), so if your favourite record is missing chances are I just haven’t heard it yet, so please share your favourite LPs below the line.
Equally, because I’ve been extremely busy, this list leans heavily on albums that I have reviewed (big names, big hype releases) as there are still a host of records I’m desperate to hear, but will not include without having listened to them in full (Thou, Pallbearer, Sasha Sloan, The Koreatown Oddity, Napalm Death, Thundercat, Idles, Against All Logic, Declan McKenna, Denzel Curry, 21 Savage, etc…). ....

We spotlight the best releases of the year through the eyes of our writers.
2020… what a disaster. Thank fuck we can say goodbye to the absolute slime ball that’s been the last 12 months and look towards 2021 through a positive lens. Fingers crossed ol’ mate COVID decides to take a backseat and then we’re off to the races with gigs, festivals and events allowed to operate freely enough.
Before we get to 2021, we thought we’d take a look back at the year that was but through the eyes of our wisest investigators – our writers. Spotlighting their top ten albums, top five songs and a few other interesting miscellanea, this is the traditional Beat’s Writer’s Wrap-up but in digital form. ....

All our music listening habits changed this year, but a few trends still emerged: comfort food, realness and the return of disco

1. Backxwash: God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It
In most years, there’s at least one musician I don’t have strong feelings about, then I’ll see them live and think “holy shit, this is my new favourite artist.” I didn’t get many chances this year, but Backxwash did it for me virtually. I had heard the Montreal-based artist here and there, but I gave this album some spins as part of my Polaris Prize jury duty and it quickly became all I listened to. It’s experimental hip-hop with the spirit of metal, very heavy and very captivating. I’ve heard rappers sample Black Sabbath before, but Backxwash (who was raised in a religious Christian household in Zambia) brought out ....

I don t think it s a coincidence that you, our listeners, chose a list of music filled with well-established artists this year. It was a year when the discovery of new music was tough. The absence of music festivals and live concerts, in general, kept me from discovering those remarkable opening acts, those second stage acts. Most of us had less listening time, whether it was the lack of a commute or the houses full of families. That s not to say great music didn t come out in 2020, but only Rina Sawayama and Hayley Williams had debuts dent your top 50, and Hayley is already an established artist with her band Paramore and Rina put out a 24-minute mini album in 2017. ....

Music that provided relief when it was sorely needed
by Aaron Mook and Nick Warren
Nick Warren
This year offered an outstanding array of musical releases, with some helping us escape the harshness of reality and others boldly confronting it.
It seems like each December, we arrive at the end of the year in awe of everything that s led us here. Of course, it s no secret that this year has been particularly grueling for a number of reasons (one in particular), but all of that time inside with this music only makes the songs and albums that stuck with us even stronger. Consisting not only of the music that felt important and timely but of the records we simply couldn t put down, we invite our readers to join us in celebrating and hopefully discovering some of the best albums 2020 had to offer. ....
