Conviction of far-right activist poses difficult questions about Ukraine's judicial system


In a statement released on the day of the verdict, the Ukrainian NGO Anti-Corruption Action Centre said, “A seven year sentence for Serhiy Sternenko is not about justice. It’s revenge on a person who has been a thorn in the side of police, politicians, state officials and property developers in Odesa.”
The judicial process was marred by inconsistencies, irregularities and missteps. The primary evidence for the conviction of Sternenko was the testimony of the alleged victim, an eyewitness (who didn’t appear in court), and cell phone data which allegedly showed Sternenko was in the vicinity of the kidnapping at the time it happened. ....

Protesters in Kyiv have announced that a new, indefinite rally in support of imprisoned activist Serhiy Sternenko is to start at noon on February 27.
They invited supporters to join the protest action over the court ruling and imprisonment of Sternenko, according to an UNIAN correspondent.
Protesters also announced over the loudspeaker that updates regarding the event would be posted on social media.
Despite the fact that the February 23 rally was over, some activists started throwing smoke bombs and firecrackers again, the correspondent said.
Verdict
Odesa s Prymorsky District Court on February 23, 2021, passed a guilty verdict in the case of activist Serhiy Sternenko, who has been convicted of abduction. The ruling provides for seven years and three months in prison and confiscation of half of the convict s property. ....

Everything about the trial of Odesa civic activist
Serhiy Sternenko and the seven-year sentence passed on 23 February arouses concern and it is not surprising that former Kremlin hostages, human rights defenders and prominent civic activists have all been vocal in their condemnation.   Comments from the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union [UHHRU] called the case “dubious”, and pointed to the fact that three potentially fatal attacks against the civic activist had never been properly investigated.  This trial, under a judge who has received very unfavourable assessments from groups advocating for judicial reform, comes six months after the highly contentious decision to bring charges of murder against Sternenko over the last of the three attacks, in which one of his assailants was killed.  The sentence on 23 February will certainly be appealed, however Ste ....
