Intelligence service claims top judicial official has Russian citizenship; he denies it, cites pressure

Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service has alleged that Roman Ihnatov, head of the High Qualification Commission, a key agency in Ukraine's judicial system, has Russian citizenship. Ihnatov, who worked as an investigator in Russia in the 1990s and was required by the law to be a Russian citizen at the time, denies having ever had Russian citizenship. The journalists say that it appears that Ihnatov has no valid Russian passport, since it can't be found in Russian databases, and that the number of the alleged passport, provided by the Foreign Intelligence Service, is likely fake. ....

Constitutional Court reform: Will Ukraine implement key condition for EU membership?

After being mired in corruption and political scandals for decades, Ukraine’s critically important Constitutional Court is now facing an attempt at reform, although its success is far from guaranteed. The issue took center stage when the reform of the Constitutional Court became one of the European Union’s key conditions for Ukraine’s membership after the country became a candidate for the bloc in June 2022. Conviction of far-right activist poses difficult questions about Ukraine's judicial system


In a statement released on the day of the verdict, the Ukrainian NGO Anti-Corruption Action Centre said, “A seven year sentence for Serhiy Sternenko is not about justice. It’s revenge on a person who has been a thorn in the side of police, politicians, state officials and property developers in Odesa.”
The judicial process was marred by inconsistencies, irregularities and missteps. The primary evidence for the conviction of Sternenko was the testimony of the alleged victim, an eyewitness (who didn’t appear in court), and cell phone data which allegedly showed Sternenko was in the vicinity of the kidnapping at the time it happened. ....
