A new species of fly, which was recently identified by researchers at the Singanallur Tank, has been named after the water body.
The insect was named
Asphondylia singanallurensis in the research paper published in the Zootaxa journal in March 2020. The authors said in the paper that they collected the leaves of jujube shrub (
Ziziphus jujuba) growing near the Singanallur Tank during their field visits between 2015 and 2018, that contained leaf galls (abnormal growth on leaves) on the surfaces. ....

Coimbatore: New species of gall midges found near Singanallur lake | Coimbatore News


The species was identified by the members of ZSI and CUBE and the team comprises Vasanthakumar, Senthilkumar Palanisamy, Vinny R Peter, and Radheshyam M Sharma.
COIMBATORE: During a field visit in 2015, a researcher from the Western regional centre of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) Durai Vasanthakumar and his team spotted a small bulge along the middle vein of one of the leaves of ziziphus mauritiana (Indian jujube) near Singanallur lake, Coimbatore. Little did they know that they had identified a new species, which would later be named after them.
While collecting and preserving the leaves with moist cotton, they spotted a pupa beneath the leaf tissues. After comparing and conducting studies on multiple similar insects, the team suspected it to be a new species in 2017. They later confirmed it with the help of an Australian expert. ....
