Baker Signs Safe Patient Access to Emergency Care Act
On Friday, Gov. Charles Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito participated in a ceremonial signing of S.2931, An Act to ensure safe patient access to emergency care. 
Named in memory of Laura Levis, Baker and Polito were also joined by Laura’s husband, Pete DeMarco, members of her family, and Sen. Pat Jehlen.
 “I signed ‘Laura’s Law’ to safeguard against future tragedies occurring just steps away from hospital emergency departments,” said Baker. “In the wake of her tragic passing, Laura’s husband, Pete, undertook an exhaustive effort to honor her legacy and protect others from similar fates. After months of collaboration and hard work with legislators, including Senator Jehlen and Representative Barber, I am proud to sign Laura’s Law and celebrate her memory in a meaningful way.” ....

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker signs ‘Laura’s law,’ named after woman who died looking for ER

Gov. Charlie Baker plans to sign a bill that aims to improve access to emergency care, known as “Laura’s Law” on Friday, January 15, at the Massachusetts State House.
Four years after Laura Levis died looking for the emergency room entrance, the bill her husband advocated for in her honor is on track to become law. The bill would create a working group to make recommendations on improving hospital signage, lighting and other way-finding elements. It also requires the state Department of Public Health to create regulations to mandate those improvements. ....

Sewage Notification Bill Passes Legislature, Now Awaits Governor's Signature – Winthrop Transcript


During the final hours of the legislative session, the Massachusetts House and Senate enacted, An Act promoting awareness of sewage pollution in public waters.
The bill now sits on Gov. Charles Baker’s desk, where he has 10 days after the bill’s enactment to sign it.
This is an important step in protecting public health, our state’s water quality, and upgrading outdated water infrastructure. H.4921, sponsored by Rep. Linda Dean Campbell (D-Methuen), Sen. Pat Jehlen (D-Somerville), and Rep. Denise Provost (D-Somerville), will require water suppliers to establish a public notification system to let Massachusetts residents know when there’s been a sewage discharge in their area. Up until now, residents had no way to know when sewage was present in their local waterways, running the risk of unknowingly coming in contact with harmful bacteria and toxins that could cause serious health impacts.
