A recent edition of the Courier had an excellent letter highlighting how all our East Lothian towns, set in the context of the surrounding Lammermuir Hills, are quickly becoming indistinguishable from anywhere else in the continuum of ‘Noddy-land’ developer housing. Sadly, with this ‘closing in’ of the place or setting from countryside, there comes no debate about ‘biodiversity compensation’, or more simply put, the ‘green trade-off’ that developers should be asked to supply in return for consuming these unique locations. Following the vast yield and supply of food for the Second World War effort, East Lothian was often referred to as the Garden County. ....
A decision to make a barber shop owner take down security shutters installed on advice of police has been branded a travesty by his local community council. Alan Mulholland spent more than £5,000 putting in the shutter at the Prestonpans branch of his Eskquire barbers shops after they were targeted by vandals last year. But when he applied for listed building consent for the change to the building, which is Category-C listed, officials refused ruling the pale grey shutters “harmful” to its historic character. Mr Mulholland has appealed to Scottish Ministers to overturn East Lothian Council’s decision and allow him to keep the security shutter, warning that forcing him to remove it could jeopardise his ability to keep the branch open. ....
A BARBER shop owner who installed a security shutter on the advice of police after a series of attacks says he may have to relocate from Prestonpans after he was ordered to remove it by planning officials. But when he applied for listed building consent for the change to the building, which is Category-C listed, officials ruled the pale grey shutters were “harmful” to its historic character. However, they did approve a separate application to be allowed to display the barber shop logo on the front of the shutter. ....
More than 600 North Berwick residents took part in a survey regarding plans for a care village on the outskirts of their town with 97 per cent against it, it has been revealed. East Lothian SNP launched the survey after developers Goldcrest lodged an appeal with the Scottish Government over proposals rejected by East Lothian Council earlier this year. Councillor Paul McLennan, SNP Holyrood election candidate for the county, said he organised the survey after local residents raised concerns about the appeal with him. Goldcrest had applied for planning permission to build 152 residential and care units on fields at Castleton Farm, east of the town. ....
