We understand that there were a lot of demands on the government in this budget, but the ask wasn t simply for the benefit of the fitness industry – it was for all Canadians, says Scott Wildeman, FIC President. The fitness industry has been decimated by the pandemic, suffering financial ruin and tremendous job losses. We were hoping this tax deduction would help breathe life back into the industry. A “Fitness Tax Credit” was one of the budget suggestions from the Fitness Industry Council of Canada, which is a trade group that represents gyms and other fitness facility operators. In its pre-budget submission, the Fitness Industry Council asked the government introduce a plan to cover up to $1,000 of what eligible physical activity programs cost. ....

EDMONTON The fitness industry has come together to ask the provincial government to support local businesses by providing more direct framework to reopen. In a release sent out on Monday, owners of fitness facilities say the data they provided to government officials has largely gone unheard. Blake MacDonald, president of Orange Theory Fitness Canada, said: “There is a theoretical risk that’s been presented, but the reality is that the numbers don’t support it. “We don’t necessarily need to rely on our own personal experiences. We don’t need to make mistakes to learn what is and what isn’t a good idea,” Conor Ruzycki, aerosol scientist at the University of Alberta, added. ....
