A police crackdown in a Black neighborhood paved the way for a Jewish resurgence

Editor’s note: In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Forward is resurfacing some of our recent coverage related to the Black-Jewish experience and racial justice. This article originally appeared in July, 2020.
If you want to come to grips with the way race, injustice and real estate intertwine in America today, a good place to start is on Corning Street, a few hundred feet away from the 10 Freeway on the edge of the Westside of Los Angeles.
Corning Street looks and feels like it hasn’t changed since the 1950s. Boxy apartment buildings with names like Desert Sands. Humble Spanish-style bungalows with stained-glass bay windows. An alley behind them claimed as a pedestrian thoroughfare by working moms. A tamale cart, competing fruit stands, and an omnipresent produce truck that jingles “La Cucaracha” as it rounds the corner. ....

EPA to discuss New Bedford Harbor cleanup in meeting next week

NEW BEDFORD  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is holding a virtual public meeting next week on the next phase of the decades-long cleanup to remove harmful chemicals from the New Bedford Harbor and its shorelines.
The meeting presentation, already available for viewing, details what the agency accomplished in 2020 and what work it has planned for 2021.
Last year, the agency completed subtidal dredging and shoreline remediation of certain zones, as well as salt marsh restoration.
According to the agency, the level of soil contamination was, on average, 1,427 parts per million at one of the eastern shoreline zones prior to intervention. After excavating and backfilling, the level was 0.01 parts per million, or non-detectable.  ....

The city will purchase the property for $1.5 million with a plan to resell a portion.

SOUTH PORTLAND In a 5-0 vote on Dec. 22, the city council approved the $1.5 million purchase of “the piggery” property, addressing the need to preserve green space despite financial risk.
The six-acre property, sitting in between Sawyer Street and the Willard Square neighborhood, off of Broadway, is one of the largest undeveloped parcels in South Portland, said a 2019
Press Herald article by Kelley Bouchard.
A developer, Dan White of HW Fine Homes in Portland, is willing to work with the city in preserving part of the land, Morelli said. White needs to seek planning board approval for his development project, which is not expected to happen until late summer 2021, and then purchase a portion of the property back from the city. ....
