Coronavirus Variant Excited To Compete With World's Top Mutations In Tokyo This Summer

Coronavirus Variant Excited To Compete With World’s Top Mutations In Tokyo This Summer
LONDON Having prepared for months to make its mark at this year’s Olympics, coronavirus variant B.1.525 a U.K. native best known for its skillful weakening of antibody responses confirmed Thursday that it was excited to compete in Tokyo against top mutations from across the globe. “I can’t wait to travel to Japan this July and show the whole world what I’m capable of,” said the highly transmissible permutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, recounting how it had honed its spike proteins and vaccine resistance in anticipation of the international gathering of deadly pathogens. “I know South Africa, Brazil, and India will be bringing the heat, but I’m planning to have a big breakout moment myself. And if I’m not a household name by the closing ceremonies, well, there’s always the 2021 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally later in the summer.” Olympic bookmakers, observing that the United S ....

Human to cat transmission of Covid-19 infection found in UK: Researchers

Researchers have now documented human-to-cat transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, that occurred during the pandemic in the UK, with the infected cats displaying mild or severe respiratory disease.
The research provides fresh evidence that people have transmitted SARS-CoV-2 to cats during the pandemic in the UK.
The study, which is published in Veterinary Record, detected the virus last year in cats that developed mild or severe respiratory disease.
Investigators used a range of laboratory techniques to show that two domestic cats from households with suspected cases of Covid-19 were infected with SARS-CoV-2.
Given the ability of the coronavirus to infect companion animals, it will be important to monitor for human-to-cat, cat-to-cat and cat-to-human transmission, said lead author Margaret Hosie of the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. ....

Covid-19: Singapore asks travellers from India to quarantine for 3-week

All travellers from India should be isolated for 21 days instead of 14 to help strengthen Singapore s defences against a new double mutant strain of SARS-CoV-2 that appears to be more infectious, reported The Straits Times citing experts on Thursday.
However, it is not yet necessary to ban flights from India, it said.
A 14-day quarantine or SHN (stay home notice) would detect more than 98 per cent of COVID-19 cases, including those who were infected while on the plane, said Associate Professor Hsu Li Yang, the vice-dean of global health at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.
A 21-day quarantine backed by specific tests would detect virtually all cases. However, that would impose a significant mental and financial cost to the traveller, Yang said. ....

Scientists find new promising antibodies against novel coronavirus

Scientists have identified and further developed novel antibody fragments from llamas and alpacas that can be used against the SARS CoV-2 virus which causes COVID-19.
These nanobodies identified by an international team led by the University of Bonn in Germany are smaller than classic antibodies.
They can penetrate the tissue better and can be produced in larger quantities.
The team also combined the nanobodies into potentially effective molecules attacking different parts of the virus simultaneously.
The approach, described in the journal Science, could prevent the pathogen from evading the active agent through mutations.
Antibodies are an important weapon in the immune system s defence against infections. ....
