1995. it struck at about 2:46 japan time, shortly after 1:00 a.m. eastern time. 8.8, a monster earthquake. already word from japanese officials that they re going to already in the process now of accepting foreign assistance because the scope of this is going to be unbelievable. let s take a listen now to nhk, the japanese network s live coverage. it s over four meters. soon after the quake. the agency is warning the tsunami could reach between 6 and 10 meters. we re getting reports of several buildings on fire. we do not know the exact amount of damage but we re soon so get a report from japan s meteorological agency. they re setting up to find out the extent of damage. all transportation systems in tokyo as well as northern japan have been stopped. airports closed in tokyo, ....
Quake and 7.4 aftershock that hit 30 minutes later. that is what triggered a tsunami that is really causing great devastation there. amazing. this is the second major quake to hit japan in just a week. first the reports of a 13-foot tsunami and now tsunami watches and warnings not only for japan, as you can imagine, but russia, japan, the philippines, indonesia, guam and the u.s. state of hawaii as well. this is evolving into an international event. dramatic footage, homes and buildings just being washed away as tsunami just literally 13-foot tsunami engulfs that country. take a look at this water damage here as you see it plowing over buildings. you see homes, businesses, cars absolutely being caught up in this flood. we ve all, of course, been familiar with the damage that a tsunami can cause. right now there is a warning about another tsunami that could hit. this one was 19 feet and apparently there are more that could hit. right now we re getting information that this is the ....
Are you hearing anything about the extent of the damage? i know it s pandemonium and chaos, not surprisingly, but are you hearing anything about the damage of all this may be? reporter: it s interesting. we were just mentioning some of the aftershocks. as i m sitting here talking to you, we ve gotten quite a lot of aftershocks since that first quake hit just before 3:00. you mentioned the images we ve been seeing, these homes being washed away on the northern coast of japan. you know, we can say that the closest city, the closest largest city is sendai, about a million people living there. obviously, that is not where we re seeing the tsunami, but we do know that magnitude 8.8 earthquake, tsunami measuring 13 feet. my goodness. reporter: really just dramatic images that we re seeing out of nkh, the same footage in new york you re monitoring at the footage, the sheer panic people are feeling. you are still in the abc ....
Welcome back, everybody. of course we re continuing our coverage of a major disaster unfolding in japan. we want to take you live coverage by nkh, the japanese network, as they cover not only this earthquake but pictures there, the result of the tsunami that followed that quake after it struck at 2:46 local time in northeast japan. now, this is not any kind of populated building. this is actually a refinery. it s an oil a natural gas refinery that, as we ve watched this thing catch fire. there were initial small flames and now we ve watched it take over the entire facility. we want to listen in now to nhk. in chiba prefecture east of tokyo, ichihara area, firefighters having a hard time, obviously, to contain that large fire there. ....
Countryside there. this is a rural area. mainly known for fishing, agriculture. however, the damage has been intense, taking out anything in its path as enormous wave rolls through the countryside. an 8.8 or perhaps 8.9 quake struck at 2:46 local time in japan. a story we ve been following for you all morning. details, as you can imagine, are pouring in, the extent of the damage, perhaps death toll on this are still unknown. we understand in some parts of japan right now people are literally on their homes, waving for help, scenes similar to hurricane katrina back in august of 2005 in new orleans and along the gulf coast. fires we have seen at oil refineries and natural gas refineries as well. people are being told to evacuate. particularly those along the coast of japan as well as in several other countries as well. this is becoming really an international event in terms of the scope of all of this. but just dramatic footage coming in. fires, flooding now, homes and businesses being ....
