Preview 2022: Tight End

Previously: Podcast 14.0A, 14.0B, 14.0C. The Story. Quarterback. Running Back. Wide Receiver. TIGHT END: IT'S BEEN FOUR YEARS AND I HAVEN'T COME UP WITH A GOOD REFERENCE RATING: 4.5 Depth Chart Flex Yr. Inline Yr. Erick All Sr. Luke Schoonmaker Sr. Carter Selzer Sr. Joel Honigford Sr. Matt Hibner Fr. Karsen Barnhart Jr. You write about things on the internet and you're like "oh dude this guy's last name is a common English word" and then absolutely nothing comes to you. Nothing good, anyway. This position group has two established senior starters who are on NFL radars, plus a couple of sixth-year guys who will chip in and a horde of younger folks lifting weights and biding their time. The only thing separating this spot from a 5 in our ratings is the lack of an out-and-out All-American sort. Seth thinks Michigan has one but that's an opinion that's not (yet) shared by others, who consistently rank Michigan's tight ends in the 6-15 range ....

Upon Further Review 2021: Offense vs Nebraska

Formation Notes: Double Eagle.

This was called 245 Split and if I added a letter that’s the gap with a down LB. 245 Split A.

And they also ran a 404 Tite front with a pinched DE, which I called 4-3 Tite.

Continuing with my convention of naming their 11 personnel formations by the position of the H (slot) receiver ”Gun Wk” for in the slot weakside, etc. when he lines up inside I’ll call out the gap. So this is Gun Str B (H receiver is in the B gap of the TE’s side).

Substitution Notes: A lot of movement at guard. Filiaga got the start at LG and rotated with Keegan until Zinter left at the end of the 1st Q. Zinter came back at the end of the 2nd Q when Filiaga went out (after stepping on McNamara), and it was Barnhart & Zinter until halftime, then Keegan and Barnhart until Keegan went out, then Barnhart and Filiaga, then Filiaga got re-hurt late and it was Barnhart and Atteberry.

Upon Further Review 2021: Offense vs Wisconsin

Mobile Version: People noted they were having trouble reading this on their phones. We traced it back to an issue with browsers that are loading the content piecemeal. We’re working on a better solution but for now we’ve got this container app, which is basically just a browser that loads our site.
Formation Notes: I did the best I could with Fox’s weird angles.

Note that they are playing with a nickel SAM who’s well inside the slot receiver. I just called that a 4-3 Over front with 2-4-5 personnel. My nomenclature for Wisconsin’s fronts was as follows:

Nose: Middle lineman when they have three on the field.
DT: The two DEs who are regular DTs in their 2-4-5 package.
DE: An OLB in their 2-4-5 package who lined up like Hutchinson et al.
OLB: An OLB standing up who’s not acting like a DE.

Also I used names for their two ILBs because they are both stars and that seemed pretty relevant when something happened with them. Speaking of names, this i ....
