Upon Further Review 2021: Defense vs Georgia

Formation Notes: Bowl games tend to get a lot of looks because coaches use the extra time to install more of them. Georgia used a lot of multi-TE sets and varied formations with them to hunt good matchups. I stuck with numeric conventions to make it easier to follow, so for example this is Gun 13 Heavy (shotgun, 1 RB, 3 TEs, heavy formation). And here’s the next play with the same personnel, which we’ll call “Gun 13 Empty 5w.” I referred to this defensive setup as “4-4 Zero” because there are no safeties. The offense is a “Gun 12 Str F Flex’ since it’s a normal 3-wide with the extra guy to the strong side (“Str”) with an "F" (not on the line of scrimmage) TE flexed out. Finally, this is Bone: Substitution Notes: TrueBlueinTexas provides. As in the second example above, Michigan tried to have a 5-2 unit that replaced Moore, Ojabo, and the starting DTs with Jeter-Speight-Jenkins-Harrell. It immediately got burned in a matchup problem. They also ran a lot o ....

Upon Further Review 2021: Offense vs Georgia

Formation Notes: UGA plays with a “Jack” a small DE that I counted as a LB even though he sets up on the line, like below. The offensive formation here is what we call “Fritz.”

This from UGA is “Nickel Odd” it’s like “Split” but with the DT at a perfect 0 technique. On Michigan’s side, Erick All’s split is what I’ve been calling “demi.”

Substitution Notes: Once again trueblueintexas has us covered. McCarthy rotated in until McNamara went on tilt and JJ finished the game, which works out to 46% McCarthy. Haskins got the start but the other two RBs got more run. All got most of the TE work as Michigan used more spread sets, which got Sainristil on the field more than usual and plenty of work for Henning. Andrel Anthony got on the field after but more often than Daylen Baldwin.
Hat: Instead of new “WRDIS” acronyms each week, from now on when a play didn’t work because the other team MADE PLAYS we’re going to recognize that with a tip of ....

Upon Further Review 2021: Offense vs Iowa

Formation Notes: Michigan used this balanced formation that I called “Gun Wk Demis”, where the TE and H are both demi-flexed:

Iowa had a Tite shift when they expected a counter run where they lined up in a 4-3 with the NT head up on the center. I called it “4-3 Odd” but it’s Tite vs 2TEs really.

Iowa also had a quasi 3-3-5 passing downs package that defies conventional labeling, where they pull a DT and an ILB for two hybrid DE/OLBs, a “Rush DE” who’s 6-2/248 and a “Leo” who’s 6-4/236, plus their normal hybrid hybrid space player who’s 6-1/205:

I called this package “Rush.” One time they were all standing around not getting set before it and I called that “Rush Amoeba.” Finally, this didn’t need a title but I called it “4-7 Over” anyways.

…not to be confused with the 8-1.

Upon Further Review 2021: Defense vs MSU

Formation Notes: Michigan started in 6-1-4 personnel.

They also used more split formations with both DTs in the A gaps and Hutchinson way out over the TE.

Substitution Notes: I couldn’t keep up. The six-man line went Ojabo-Jenkins-Hinton-Smith-Welschof-Hutchinson. The interior got a ton of rotation, while Hutchinson and Ojabo got the majority of the snaps at OLB. Ross was ever-present while Colson and NHG split the WLB snaps about 60-40. Turner started over Green but Green got plenty of go; Turner returned after going out for what appeared to be his wind knocked out.
On the subject of officiating, especially holding: My goal with this exercise is to get at the why of the game, particularly which Michigan players did well, and which coaching decisions bore fruit. Usually in the process I call out uncalled penalties that directly affected the play to explain my charting. Regular readers understand that it’s part of the game, and it excites little comment.

Upon Further Review 2021: Offense vs MSU

Formation Notes: Nothing new in the annals of MGoCharting but there were a few that probably need refreshers. They use a Double-Eagle on passing downs (see last year’s UFR that I did over the summer). I’ll note it as Eagle then where the LBs are on the line, e.g. Eagle AAD.

Michigan also brought back the Pistol Diamond formation we call Fritz. Hello again Fritz.

MSU had a lot of formations with two semi-safeties at about 7 yards and then a deep middle one. Often (as in this case) one or both walked down to LB depth at the snap so I just counted it at as “high.”

Substitution Notes: Barnhart got the start at LG but 11-manned two plays and got pulled for Keegan, who was reinserted in the 2nd half and stuck despite still clearly being injured; Zinter went the whole way at RG. Trente Jones came on wearing #80 as a sixth OL. Andrel Anthony took Baldwin’s spot, broke out.
