Blum Center at UCSB Hosts Public Forum To Discuss Post-Pandemic Green New Deal

On Wednesday, Feb. 24, the Blum Center on Poverty, Inequality and Democracy at UC Santa Barbara hosted a public forum, “The Green New Deal in Action,” to discuss the relevance of the mammoth policy initiative to residents of the Santa Barbara area and other communities in the Central Coast.

Over 130 people attended the public forum, including UCSB students, I.V. residents and others in the broader Goleta area.
Championed by the Sunrise Movement and other figures in the progressive movement, including politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ed Markey, the Green New Deal refers to various public policy proposals intended to simultaneously address climate change, create jobs and reduce economic inequality. ....

Eight Protesters Arrested Outside Gate to San Marcos Foothills Housing Development

Zick told Noozhawk that those arrested were not targeted for any purpose other than violating the penal codes, not for their race or ethnicity.
Those arrested reportedly ranged in age from 20 to 70, and as of 2 p.m., all had been released.
Orlosky had a brush with danger the day prior. At 1:30 p.m. Thursday, he and another demonstrator attempted to block the gate. A bulldozer, he said, pulled up to just a couple of inches from him. 
All of a sudden, it got real, Orlosky said. 
Santa Barbara community organization El Centro immediately set up a fund to help those who were arrested. It is calling on the sheriff s department and Santa Barbara County Supervisor Gregg Hart to drop all charges. ....

Planned Development Next To San Marcos Foothills Preserve Faces Legal Challenges

Save the San Marcos Foothills, an organization led by Channel Islands Restoration and established to protect undeveloped property next to the San Marcos Foothills Preserve, carried out a demonstration on Monday, January 8th to announce a series of legal actions to the public.

Gallery Los Olivos closes 2020 with its annual Winter Salon exhibit, both in person and online | Art

With paintings hung from floor to ceiling, Gallery Los Olivos has enough space to showcase more than 50 different local artists during Winter Salon, the gallery’s annual salon-style exhibition. And for those unable to make it to the gallery in person this year, the exhibit is available online to view for free.
