Centro Cultural de la Raza celebrates 50 years of 'lucha, movimento and florecimiento'

Before July 1971, it was an abandoned, concrete water tank at Balboa Park. Today, it is the Centro Cultural de La Raza, a colorful hub born out of the Chicano Movement for Chicano, Mexican, Latino and indigenous art and culture.
On Saturday, the Centro celebrated its 50
th anniversary, honoring the work of those who transformed the space into a cultural haven and its continuous efforts to foster expression and education.
“It is 50 years of lucha, movimento and florecimiento,” Amelia Enrique, president of the Centro, said during the event, saying it has been 50 years of efforts, movement and flourishment to bring the center to what it is today. ....

San Diego artist sues school district, construction company over destroyed mural at Logan Heights school


SAN DIEGO   
A renowned San Diego Chicano artist who watched as an excavator demolished his 32-year-old mural at a Logan Heights school in September has sued San Diego Unified School District and a construction company over the destruction of the artwork.
Muralist Salvador Roberto Torres painted the mural in the late 1980s on an outside wall at Memorial Prep Middle School. The colorful, 75-foot-by-45-foot mural depicted diverse students, graduates, veterans of World War I and Sharon “Christa” McAuliffe, who died in the 1986 space shuttle Challenger explosion.
The school campus is undergoing construction to transform the elementary school and middle school into a K-12 complex. The building with Torres’ mural was torn down on September 23. ....

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, California The grim local milestone of more than 2,000 deaths related to COVID-19 across San Diego County comes as a new variant is picking up steam. And unfortunately, this is hurting the Latinx community more.
Infection rates among Latinos in San Diego County was about 63% and deaths were about 50%. Now both of those numbers have decreased a little bit but are still very high especially when you factor in that Latinos make up 34% of the population in San Diego County, said Nancy Maldonado, San Diego Chicano Federation. ....
