A hit-and-run crash possibly involving street racing left two dead in Palmdale early Wednesday. Investigators are searching for the driver of a black Dodge Challenger, which rear-ended a Toyota Corolla around 12:30 a.m. on Rancho Vista Boulevard near 11th Street West next to the Antelope Valley Mall. The Toyota spun out of control and hit a nearby light pole, catching fire, said Lt. Al Barajas of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Palmdale station. Muralist Salvador Roberto Torres painted the mural in the late 1980s on an outside wall at Memorial Prep Middle School. The colorful, 75-foot-by-45-foot mural depicted diverse students, graduates, veterans of World War I and Sharon “Christa” McAuliffe, who died in the 1986 space shuttle Challenger explosion. The school campus is undergoing construction to transform the elementary school and middle school into a K-12 complex. The building with Torres’ mural was torn down on September 23. ....

The two boys who died were ages 17 and 18, according to Lt. Al Barajas with the Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department s Palmdale station. The identities of the victims have not been released by officials pending family notification. The hit-and-run crash happened around 10:20 p.m. Saturday in the area of 10th Street West and Avenue O-8. The two teens were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. ....
