All of us thoroughly condemn the violence that broke out last night. Reporter the University Spokesperson said the violence is nothing like they have ever seen before. The university is doing all its can to foster an environment where everybody is safe to express themselves. And i think this is a time for cool, calm and considered reflection and really for all of us at the community to determine how we commit to free speech and expression. To suspend oncampus parties. While the latest incidents were at offcampus fraternity homes, its still a cause for concern to the students i spoke to. Its obviously incredibly sad to hear. Reporter the latest case im talking about happened over the weekend and it involved two assaults on females at offcampus fraternity homes over the weekend that led to a voluntary the decision by fraternities and sorority here at cal to suspend oncampus events at least for now. When you look at the most recent stats from the Berkeley Police department, it shows that in 2015, there were a reported 22 rape cases on campus. But those numbers arent directly correlated to frat or Sorority Parties that took place on campus in 2014. For students that are well aware of this issue, they see the decision by their peers as at least a step in the right direction. He did not do what hes accused of. Reporter officer Ryan Walterhouse also pleaded not guilty. Hes charged with the gauging in prostitution for allegedly tipping off a sex worker about sting operations. Hes willing to face these charges head on and discuss what the real truth in this situation is. Reporter the Attorney Says both officers are good men and good Police Officers. They want to serve their community. They were protecting the community. Reporter jasmines Attorney Says the alleged crimes are scandals and fears its just the tip of the iceberg. Theres a code of conduct youre supposed to engage in and when you step outside of that and go into illegal conduct, you must be punished for it.
