Four people are missing after a cargo ship capsizes off the coast of georgia. The u. S. Coast guard forced to suspend rescue efforts because of fire on board the vessel. The coast guard says the 71,000 ton vessel capsized after leaving the port of brunswick early this morning. The golden ray is believed to be carrying cars. So were still conducting rescue operations. We have assets on scene. They continue to do what they can. It is a complex situation, so, you know, were looking not just for the safety to be able to rescue the people on board but to also be able to provide safety for our crews. Its ongoing and were looking to throw as much of it as we can and we have everybody looking to try and solve this complex problem. All right. The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West Incident Management Team recently ended its 40-day coordinated response effort to mitigate the pollution threat from the tanker Munger T. Ball wreck, 70 miles northwest of Key West.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Coast Guard monitored the wreck site for years. In 2019, following an uptick in confirmed sheening in the area, Coast Guard Capt. Adam Chamie, the federal on-scene coordinator, determined the site posed a potential threat to the environment.
A response team was established, comprised of members from the Coast Guardâs National Strike Force, the District 7 Response Advisory Team, the Office Environmental Management and Salvage Engineering Response Team, the Navy Supervisor of Salvage and Diving, NOAA, the Maritime Administration, the lead contractor Resolve Marine Group, more than 15 subcontractors, along with the offshore supply vessel the Shelia Bordelon.
