Also the provide safety for our crew. So its ongoing. Were look iing to throw as muc as we can and we have everybody looking to try to solve this complex problem. Crews are working to stabilize the vessel with salvagers an the coast guard says theyll resume operations once its safe to do so. Captain jon reed spoke with me last hour. The cause of the nature of why it happened is still under investigation and the investigators are here in brunswick commencing that investigation. With the help of the vessels master, first mate and their engineer. The coast guard continues to work with our partners in unified command here composeded of federal, state and party. That would be the department of natural resources, brunswick, as well as gallagher murray. It looks like its on its side then another image we saw, it is nearly upside down. So talk to me about the prior theties here. If there are four people missing, but then at the same time, you have to suspend rescue operations because of the fire on board. What are the priorities in tackling this accident . You bring up a great point. As mentioned earlier, we had to suspend our search for the four persons on board as a fire started on board and the vessel continued to be unstable. Our firgs priority is the safety of the responders as well as the public. In doing that, once we are able to ensure their safety through securing the vessel and ensuring its stable, we will then work through the possibilities of trying to get back on board and locate the individuals. The other outcome, it could be teamed more appropriate to right the vessel and desmoke and dewater before were b able to get in there and locate the four individuals. Want to bring in captain james staples, a retired cargo ship captain and Maritime Safety consultant. Thanks so much for being with us. So in your view, when you look at these images and the information that we know in assessing thing, how can a cargo ship of this size capsize . What are the potential factors here . Well, give than we dont know when the fire started frk the fire started after she capsized or before the fire capsized, now we tell its about why she may have capsized. If the fire started previously and they were applying water into the cargo holds, the water to one side of the vessel could have zawiszaed the vessel to lay over to her star board side. Depending on the Fire Fighting system. A co 2 system, a foam system, they may have used it up and then applied water to the cargo holds. The other problem could have been an initial stability problem when they left the port. She could have laid over and kept going because they had not a lot of margin in the center of gravity in the vessel and they could have rolled over that way, so it could be a stability problem that they initial lynn cured from discharging vehicles or maybe moving fuel around or maybe moving balance around on board the ship. So whether we know if the fire caused the vessel to become unb stable or if there might have been close with the stability to begin with when they sailed off towards brunswick. So captain, i have a question, too, then, if the coast guard has suspended its search of f these four missing crew members and the fire on board is partly why, are we talking about the search efforts that involve coast guard say divers or is it strictly by way of conducting the rescue message, mission or Search Mission by another vessel . What do you envision is likely happening . Depending again what type of how this fire start ed, these four people that are missing could have been down in the engine room at the time. Obviously the vessel is maneuvering out so the engine room would have been manned with people down in the engine room so if the vessel is on her side, you cant get easy access because youve got to imagine that ladders are no longer theyre now fore and out. Youd be impossible to climb a ladder. So its going to be very, very difficult to get into an engine room to even find somebody and the power could be off so its going to be very dark. Its very, very dangerous and risky situation. Wow. Terrible situation. Captain staples, thank you so much for being with us. Thank you. Still ahead, meeting canceled. President trump in a series of tweets revealing he had planned on holing secret peace talks today with leaders of the taliban at camp david but decided to scrap them. After the taliban carried out a car bomb iing in kabul that kild u. S. Soldier ellis ortiz last week. Well today, u. S. Secretary of state mike pompeo defended the preside president decision to invite the taliban on u. S. Soil just days before the 9 11 anniversary and the president s call to cancel the talks. You know sh it is just a few weeks ago, im sure youre well aware of this, that the taliban put out a video in which they support ed the 9 11 attacks, reiterating their support for the 9 11 attacks. Blaming the 9 11 attacks on the United States and foreign policy. I guess the question would be heres an organization that still supports 9 11. Still believes that the United States was to blame. We brought that on ourselves. Why bring people like that to camp david . I understand why you want to negotiate for peace, but why bring people like that to camp david . The American People are demanding it. Now almost two decades and loss of life when i was with that family last night, amazing patriots. Almost the whole family. His father himself served honor bly in the United States. We have an obligation to do everything we can to protect those men an women and take down that risk. Thats what President Trump was a aiming to do. We understand who they are. When i was a drirector of cia, young men and women serving afghanistan taking enormous risk risk to their lives. Were aiming to get this right. Aiming to talk to those leaders who can deliver on these outcomes. Thats what were focused on and were going to keep driving towards that outcome. With me now, congressman walls. A republican representative from florida, a member of the House Armed Services me and served in afghanistan. Thank you so much for being with us. Youve been very outspoken about these peace talks. You tweeted on thursday, we should not be negotiating with the taliban as have they shown no desire for peace. None. So you heard the secretary of state whos defending that notion of talking. Is it the talks that rubs you the wrong way or is it the circumstances or the location of these talks with the taliban . Well, first, let me say i can understand the president s frustration. Heck, the American Peoples frustration. This war has been long, hard and co costly. I just left this morning a memorial for two green bareas that i lost in afghanistan years ago but that doesnt mean that we can just walk away or just wish away these wars. My concern are the details that are coming out of this deal. Number one, the taliban are declaring this a victory. This quote unquote peace deal. Theyre declaring a victory for outlas iing a americans. Two, the Afghan Government feels delegitimized because they havent been included in these talks then thirdly, as i tweeted, the taliban have shown zero desire for peace. There is no cease fire theyve agreed to. In fact, theyve ramped up their attacks. Weve talked about the american soldier that just came home this morning in a coffin. And then finally, one of the major aspects of the deal was that the taliban assured us that they would stop afghanistan from being used by alqaeda. Isis and others to launch attacks on the west. Even if you buy into those assurances, which i dont, i dont think they have the military capability to keep alqaeda from using afghanistan as a base. What can they do that the United States air force, army and the 200,000 man afghan army have been fighting to do for the 18 years, so i just have a loft concerns, im urging the president to walk away from this deal as it stands. So you believe the notion even this administration talking, trying to negotiate something, is a big mistake or is is it that the president tweet this out making public what he says was a secret me meeting . Well, so first of all, i want to be clear that all of these types of insurgencies an counterinsurgencies, need to end in some type of negotiateded peace. My issue is with the terms of the deal as we understand them now. I do not think we are getting hardly anything in exchange for withdrawing our forces. Again, the taliban are tweeting it as a victory and i dont buy that either rhetorically or from a military capability standpoint that the taliban have walked away from, have walked away from alqaeda, which is what drove us to afghanistan in the first place. So among those though reportedly we can fight those wars over there or the key point, they will follow us home. My issue is the timing, the terms of the deal and among the terms. Reportedly, that the taliban would divorce itself or somehow express that it would no longer be in support of say terrorist organization like alqaeda and that is one of the terms. And that the u. S. Would pull out 14,000 troops. What, what of the terms that you know reportedly to be clear, to pull out a little over 5,000 troops. I am reassured to hear the president say he would leave over 8,000 to continue the Counterterrorism Mission, but my understanding is thatven those troops would be on a timeline. I was in afghanistan when president obama amouns ed a timeline and everybody began hedging for the beginning of the end. I just dont think ths in our interest and i do think the situation there can go from bad to worse. The minorities that are no the Afghan Government and make up a huge part of the army and have been oppressed brutally over the years are afraid of america abandoning the situation there and the situation could devolve back into civil war and if we have to fight our way back in, the it will be far more pensive in the long run. Do you worry this administration is trusting the taliban too much . One of the other conditions would be that the taliban would act in counterterrorism role. Again, so i dont see, one, i dont buy into that assurance. Weve seen nothing, zero, from the taliban indicating that theyre walking away from alqaeda. Either publicly or privately. But i dont think they have the military cape bability to make those assurances. At the end of the day, if the United States lead and leaves a vietnam yuck, bad things will devoid. You have china and russia and others looking to back the United States leadership and again b, we can fight these wars in kandahar and fight them forward or they will follow us home as we saw when president obama pulled out of iraq too quickly and then we saw the development of isis and then we saw attacks across europe and inspired attacks in the United States. And what were your thoughts on the idea of a meeting such as this taking place at camp david . Well, i dont ever want to see again as we head into the anniversary of 9 11, i do not ever want to see these terrorists step foot on the United States soil. Period. Congressman, thank you so much. Paula newton is in the bahamas this afternoon so paula, one week later, the nation still very much in desperate need of help. Reporter absolutely on its knees still. We are at one week, fred and from the disaster area, you can see why its taken so long to even get the basics to people. I mean fred, first for the good news. When i was in the abaco islands yesterday, at least there people were starting to get out. They were in the ferries and boats getting back here the to nassau. A lot of them had adequate food and water as well. The problem though is what theyre leaving behind and so many of them, fred, it was so sad. Theyll say to you i saw my neighbor washed away. I saw my the sister washed away. I have not seen anyone. And now when we talk about the death toll and the difficulty with trying to recover those bodies, some people believe theyll never see their loved ones again and even identifying the missing and those deceased will be very difficult because many may never be found. Through all of this, there have been a will the of private donations, a lot of private agencies on the ground and a lot of them are talking about how especially in first 24 or 48 hours, how crucial a lot of that private aid was. A lot of those private donati s donations. I want you to listen now to the Operations Director for world central kitchen. Now as crucial as those private donations were there has been some difficulty and controversy b about whether a lot should have been left to the government here. We were just speaking to u. S. Mark sanford declare iing his challenge to President Trump. Sanford, a vocal critic of the president , is making the economy the focus of his campaign. I think we need to have a conversation on what it means to be a republican. I think that as the Republican Party, we have lost our way and it takes on a couple of different fronts. You have to know you have no chance of winning the republican nomination so why run for president . I think you probably would have said that same thing to donald trump just a matter of month ago if he faced the likes of jeb bush and others. You honestly think you have a serious chance of beating him . Im saying you never know. All right. Sanfords own e party in South Carolina tdismissing his bid saying this is about him looking to raise his political career from the grave not him wanting to advance ideas ch hes the third republican to join the race. Lets bring in our political reporters. Good to see you both. This is a long shot for sanford perhaps and President Trumps campaign is calling this announcement irrelevant but is it . When youve got now three republicans challenging the incumbent president . I dont think its irrelevant at all and of course obviously President Trumps campaign is going to say that. Theyve got the muscle. The resources. The army of foot soldiers across the country. But what this does tell you once again and both julie and i have talked to many voters out there who would say this is that theres an appetite among some republica republicans for someone else and theres also a chance here that if you end up with a close race in the general election, that you know, people who are leaning toward someone like sanford or billy welt could sit it out and stay home if theres enough dissatisfaction with President Trump by the end of next year. We dont know whats going to happen with the economy. We dont know if people are going to feel as though things are going well for them so i do think theres a big chance here for this to make things r harder for President Trump. Julie, i see your saking your head. Hes making the debt and Government Spending a focal point in his campaign saying he wants to try to move the Republican Party in the other direction. But the president will continue to boast that the economy is his you know, strongest asset. Is there an opening here . Well i think what we hear him trying to do is sort of push the Republican Party back to some ideal that were its bedrock before the rise of President Trump. The Republican Party was the party of fiscal conservatives. Among whom sanford certainly counts himself and that was a very powerful movement when obama was president. But this is a different day. President trump has really changed the Republican Party and its not clear to me having talked to a lot of voters as mave has those are the priorities of american voters. I do think that if republicans are is another alternative, b even if its not one they identify with personally, i think there are a lot of republicans out there who would like to have someone else to vote for other than a dralt and that could with a real problem for President Trump if the economy does take a turn and if there is an appetite for a third candidate there. All right. So theres a new abc News Washington post poll and its focusing on the democratic race. Biden has a sizable lead over the rest. However, you see sanders and warren are gaining a few points here and there. What do you think is happening here . Well, its just obviously voters do have increasing confidence in elizabeth warren. Weve seen that month after month after month and shes made this kind of steady increase in the polls and people are getting more comfortable with her thinking about her up against donald trump. Which has been one of the big hurdles for all of the candidates because whats really driving bide b bs support is the fact that he is the person that most voters think would be strongest up against President Trump. As hes gone out on the campaign trail and has a number of different stumbles or he seems older to some voters than they remember from the Obama Administration days, youre seeing his support start to you know, kind of crumble a little bit. And so she will really, warren, will really have a chance on the debate stage this week to potentially show that she has what it takes to go up against President Trump, which is what many voters are looking for. So we asked you know undecided democratic voters what they think about the candidates and just take a listen. This is what some said. Warren is in my opinion, a better candidate. Biden is just too old school. Hes you know, old guard. I think that you need new le leaders. I like kamala because she has that good prosecutorial energy. Shes super, got that executive experience. She is a strong woman. Im considering corey boy bo right now. I still like other candidates. I like kamala. I like julian castro. So julie, quite the cross section. What should we learn from that . Democrats dont really know what they want yet. Sometimes when you talk to voters, theyll say i really like joe biden, but i also really like warren. And theres not a lot of sort of cross section. Theres flot a lot of overlap of how theyre packaging themselves, so i think theres still a lot of uncertainty out there, but what you also hear is a rot of pining for Something Different from what theyve seen. I think voters understand theres something useful to the energy that comes with learning a candidate that people havent really seen on the political scene before. We saw that with donald trump on the republican side and i think theres a hunger for that on the democratic side so thats kind of vying with Peoples Security they feel when they see joe biden in their minds as the priority for going into 2020. Super fascinating. Thanks to both. Appreciate it. Thanks. Still ahead, a look inside the taliban as President Trump faces huge criticism over a planned meeting with the terror groups leaders on u. S. We are supported by god. He wants to show off his forces for our cameras. His men are gathering just outside the village. It is exceptionally rare and dangerous for dozens of fighters to congregate in one place. I have been coming to afghanistan for more than ten years. For more on what president s latest move meeps from a National Security perspective, i want to bring in john kirby and cnn National Security analyst peter berken. Good to see you both. And thank for coming back, admiral, too. So peter, yeah the president says this is a secret meeting. Yet he tweets about it. What does that mean for any potential of future meetings involving the taliban, afghanistans leadership . I think secretary of state pompeo has been pretty clear on some of the shows that the negotiation in that tweet the president himself says the negotiations are finished. And that meeting was canceled. So i think those statements kind of speak for them. I think President Trump understands that if he wins a second term, which is not off the question, afghanistan is going down the tubes because of the nguyunilateral withdrawal o u. S. Forces. Its going to be a real problem for him. I think essentially you have buyers remorse about this whole project. Particular ly in light of the 16th american fatality in 2019 was which the taliban took credit for a couple of days ago so in my view, id be interested to see what admiral kirby thinking. I think the president made the right choice here. These negotiations were done without the Afghan Governments involvement at all, which is strange because they are the elected government of the country and we have an afghan election coming up on september 28th, which is more important Afghan People than some kind of notional Peace Agreement with the taliban. After all, theyll then get a chance to choose their actual government. So peter, you believe that the 16th u. S. Troop death was the breaking point for this administration to move forward. I think they had a meeting on august 17th in new jersey and they were people who were very unhappy about this. John bolton, the National Security adviser was not happy and both the military and cia pushed back heavy on the notion of a total withdrawal because they want to be able to continue with their Counterterrorism Mission in afghanistan which requires a certain number of troops for it to be b successful. So admiral, secretary of state mike pompeo defending the president this morning about this meeting on u. S. Soil. Camp david, et cetera. Pompeo says you got to meet with bad actor, but given the timing and proximity to 9 11, what does this move signal to you to the International Community as well . I think the main signal to the International Community and this is one that this administration consistently has dlired is one of unpreparedness. They went into this not fully prepared or understanding what could possibly be the result of bringing the taliban and ghani government here to washington, d. C. The conditions werent ready for that. Ive been speaking to afghan officials over the weekend and they tell me that the ghani government dleliberately stayed out of this intersection between, between the taliban because they didnt want to gum up the works, but didnt have high hopes it was going to lead to anything practical and theyve been frustrated because theyve been left out of it. So the message were sending is that once again, the president charges in wanting to do a big splashy event and hammer home a teal before the conditions are right for that, before the details have been laid out and before the players quite frank ly, all the players and peters right. The ghani government has to be the major player here. Have stated theyre ready the move forward. Reportedly one of conditions or one of the you know, increment is of this plan was taliban would actually be given kind of counterterrorism responsibilities. Theyd have to make assurances for that. Is that realistic admiral in your view . No. Theyve not renounced alqaeda, or violence. Just a week before one of our soldiers was killed in the attack in kabul just a few days ago, but a week before that, there was a Major Taliban offensive. Theyve not given up any desire to commit acts of terrorism. Not to mention, fred, people forget and peter knows this better than anybody. The taliban isnt a monolithic organization. They dont all speak for one another. They have splintered groups. Its difficult for any negotiator to look you in the eye and say for sure they can prevent x, y and z from happening. Just not the way they operate. Quickly peter, taliban, counterterrorism. Well see. All right well leave it there. Thanks. Appreciate it. Straight ahead, pressure mounting on the president to make a decision on guns in this country. Top republicans say they cant act if trump doesnt have a plan. Will anything get done . Well speak to an activist leading the effort for gun control, next. As Congress Returns to washington this week, the pressure is mounting for Gun Legislation despite no clear sign of where the president stands on gun control. Cnn has learned trump instructed the u. S. Justice department and members of the white house Domestic Policy Team to prepare a menu of options that he could present to lawmakers when they return to capitol hill. Theyre already a pair of bills on Mitch Mcconnells desk, but last week, mcconnell said he wont bring any Gun Legislation to the floor without the president s backing. Joining us now is the co president of brady, an organization focused on preventing gun violence. Chris brown, good to see you. When Congress Comes back this week, what do you want to see happen . The senate take up s 42. The companion measure that would actually close the loophole that we have right now that allows private sales of guns to happen with no background check at all. Weve learned in the odessa shooting that thats how the shooter apparently got his gun even though he was a prohibited purchaser. One in five guns sold today is sold with no background check at all. The senate can fix that by passing s42 and having americans sign it. 97 of americans support this measure so we want that to move forward. We also want extreme risk laws to be promoted in the states and for congress to enact legislation to provide more toll lars to states to invent them, to enact those laws for funding. In the shooting had concerns about his behavior. He was going up on the roof of his house and shooting into the darkness animals. So this could have been a situation where an extreme risk law made a difference and we Want Congress to take up an assault weapons ban. Youve heard the president in the last month, three shootings, express a very different view on background checks alone. So who is your audience 1234 who are you talking to right now . To Mitch Mcconnell who has a couple of bills on his desk, however he says hes not acting until he hears something from the president or are you dregting your thoughts to the president to try to change his mind about what kind of act he should engage in . Were talking to members of congress, yes. I wish that i could tell you ive had a personal sitdown with President Trump. I havent. The only organization that hes met with so far has been the nra. Although you rightly note that hes changed his position at least several times since pa parkland on this issue. Look, brady represents both gun owners and non gun owners alike. We have one mission. Thats to solve the epidemic of gun violence and were talking to all lawmakers. I think too few of them who are on the republican side of the aisle are really listening on this issue although we have convinced many to join us in this fight. Although sometimes you dont have to have a facetoface with the president because hes a big consumer of news organizations programs just like this and perhaps this is your opportunity in which to make a plea to him. What would you say to him if he was listen bing right now . I would say theres no issue, mr. President , that you can find in the American Public today in which there is greater ewan imty than to fix this issue of gun violence. And that he has the opportunity to say he wants expanded background checks, he wants extreme risk laws. He wants a ban on assault weapons. The majority of americans support all of these measures and if he doesnt take action, make no mistake we will have more mass shootings. We can solve this problem and he can prevent the next tragedy by leading on this issue. If he doesnt, then we will make sure that this is an election issue. And the American People want this change. Chris brown, thanks so much for your time. Thank you. All right. Thank you so much for joining me this sunday. The news room continues with anna cabrera right after this. Want to brain better .
