the strength of an update as soon as we have information. wral s laura leslie showing what she knows about the job cuts over a cisco. reporter: multiple media outlets are reporting the tech giant is expected to cut the 40,000 jobs over the next couple of months. they employ 71,000 people around the world amounting to 20%. the industry analysts say the reduction is response for the changing demand for networking as more and more businesses turn to cloud computing and other web-based servic servers is falling. that isn t expected to change anytime soon. a company insider say they are transferring to a less hardware heavy business model. cisco has not yet confirmed the reported cuts and it is unclear how many will be cut at the rtp site. it is not just cisco. other giants has also announced cuts. iker soft is laying off about this summer we learned a should be would be cutting 3000 jobs. the production at cisco is by far the largest. laura leslie reporting. jack ro ....
directed the american heritage rivers initiative at the white house council on environmental quality. today miss newman will discuss the post war impact on the forts, on the surrounding neighborhoods in washington and their evolution into parks. and kim elder. miss elder is the national parks services program manager for civil war defenses of washington. she is responsible for the management, the oversight program development of 16 for 16 of the remaining forts and batteries opened and operated by the national parks service. so today ms. elder will highlight the parks today and provide us with a preview of this weekend s activities at fort stevens. so let me begin now with dr. cooling. [ applause ] good afternoon, folks. pleasure to be back in this lovely facility even if every time i come here i go in the wrong entrance to the national archives. as a researcher, i became very accustomed over 30 years or more of going in the other side. well, you don t want to hear ....
you can read faster than i can talk so i won t read the slides. i want you to see beautiful places i love. they are history and parks and recreation and national resources and frankly the lungs of the city are largely these forts and the parks. so there we start. as frank said the city was unprotected down below. this is fort washington. if you haven t been there, you should go. it s quite different from the forts that were built during the civil war. after bull run, lincoln knew the city was vulnerable. that s when he ordered director major general john g. barnard to design forts around the city to protect it. here they are. these are the ones available there. it was quite an amazing feat to build all those. it was just tremendous. here they are there. i ve circled them here on this old map, the ones that are under government ownership today. the park service owns all the ones in washington, d.c. and one in maryland and one in virginia. the ones in virginia are owned ....
for years nobody believed it. the confederate soldiers themselves claimed to see the dome of the capital. that s hock um. there s nowhere to see the dome of the capital. you can see it s below where visual would have gotten it out in silver spring. probably saw the lights of georgetown. but mccauslin had gotten up there. there s claims to ride up in broad daylight. no substantiating that. old soldiers have vivid memories. one little comment, not a question. i was a surveyor in washington, d.c. for 42 years. in our office we had 1880 i think u.s. gs topographic maps. first put out by the city and government and fortifications still on there. cool set of maps. if you haven t seen them, library of congress i think has them. thanks. with that i d like to again thank the national archives for hosting this really wonderful event. our speakers, please join me one last time in a round of applause for them. union forces tried to create a gap in the forces but the attack ....
the events of the night of the shooting, shortly after the audience ran out. that s going to conclude the town hall. the meeting was cut short. prior to the ruckus, the chief was describing the reasons 24-year-old brown was being investigated by police. the chief says she was driving a stolen car. ms. brown had two felony warrants. and found the plates. two other plates were on the vehicle. e motions were runs emotions were running high. [ yelling ] one woman who was there at the scene spoke up about how scared she was. she said that her car was ramped by brown on the night of the shooting. she was using the car as a weapon and thank god people weren t injured just cars, but she it all happened so fast, and yes i was also scared when i heard the gunshots. reporter: alice brown s family was on hand. they didn t speak to the media but they were very shaken up and emotional about the whole thing. they hired an attorney, who is going to look into t ....
