Pretender to the French throne demands €1million in damages and the return of five properties


A pretender to the defunct French throne is suing the foundation that manages his family’s former estate.
Jean d Orleans, 55, the Count of Paris, whose ancestor was the brother of King Louis XVI, is demanding 1 million euros in damages from the Saint-Louis Foundation and requesting the return of five properties.
One of the homes, the Royal Domain of Dreux, west of Paris, the count was living in rent-free from 2001 until September, when the foundation urged him to move out after asking him to start paying his way, according to Tatler.
The Royal Domain of Dreux boasts a neo-Gothic style that originated in the 19th century and features numerous lavish buildings including the Royal Chapel, which houses the family s tombs. ....

France might have done away with its monarchy twice - first in 1793 when the French Revolution sent King Louis XVI to the guillotine, and again, in 1870, when Napoleon III was exiled - but that hasn t stopped so-called pretenders to the throne throwing their weight around.
The latest instance is from one of a group of three pretenders, each of which thinks he has the strongest case to be the unofficial King of France, Jean d Orleans, the Count of Paris, whose ancestor was the brother of King Louis XVI.
