Yorker david remnick wrote this in the early days of the russian invasion of ukraine. so lewinsky has galvanized his people through the clarity of his language, churchill in his essay the scaffolding of rhetoric wrote, of all the talents bestowed upon men, none is so precious as the gift of oratory. he when joys it wields a power more durable than that of a great king. here is how winston churchill that power in december of 1941. here we are, together, a group of 90 folks who seek our ruin, here we are, together defending all that to freeman s gift. it is not given to us to peer into the mysteries of the future, still i have found my hope sure and in violets that ....
Flag of those who defend ukraine, europe and the world at the cost of their lives. they asked me to bring this flag to you, to the u.s. congress, two members of the house of representatives and senators whose decisions can save millions of people. so, let this decision be taken, let this flag stay with you, ladies and gentlemen. this flag is a symbol of our victory, and this war, we stand, we fight and we will win because we are united. ukraine, america and the entire free world. well, i was thinking personally how hard this guy works traveling to the front one day traveling to washington the next it s not an easy assignment and then to give a wonderful historic speech like that in his third language which he is not accustomed to do it, usually he speaks ukrainian and here he comes doesn t speaks to us in our own language, i was thinking how it s not how he talked about it, but how proud one should be to be on the side of this man and how proud one must have been in that chamber to be close to greatness because i think what we saw tonight was greatness and we should be appreciative of that. he thanked us tonight he think the american people, you ve made the point recently that we should be grateful to ukraine. it s very much the case, people thought talk about the numbers and sometimes republicans use the phrase blank check but the check isn t ....
Biden has a different job which is to do the best he can by ukraine and democracy but he also has political pressure in congress that he has to deal with and more profoundly, he desperately wants to, i think he s right to, avoid a situation in which the military conflict expands into europe and takes the united states in a way that would be horrendous. because we are dealing with a non rational act at this point in vladimir putin. what he did, invading ukraine in a sense makes no sense, it s been a failure, it has undermined him politically in russia, it has caused hundreds of thousands of the best and brightest in particularly urban russia to flee the country for how long we don t know, it has been ruin this for the economy looking back at this the political advantage for putin s euro, this is a colossal failure and it s very hard to see how he gets out of this. very hard. and i think, zelenskyy really ....
To stand with them. but that line was very well directed at the european allies. it s also directed to congress, we see figures on the right wing of the republican party who are to say the least unenthusiastic about aiding ukraine, to my mind these are the same figures who are an enthusiastic about democracy as you and i understand it, period. they see no great moral or strategic advantage in helping ukraine. and, of course, the republicans are gonna be a majority in the house of representatives very soon, a narrow majority but a majority nevertheless. so getting some of these weapons systems to ukraine in the future might be complicated. david remnick, thank you very much for joining us on this historic night, really appreciate it. always a pleasure. thank you. coming up, what was special prosecutor jack smith learned from the hundreds of pages of transcripts testimony from dozens of witnesses that were released today by the january six committee, they will join us next. y. sh ....
