you re live in the cnn newsroom. i m jim acosta in washington. and we begin this hour with the war in ukraine and its global implications. the director of the cia confirms what cnn has been reporting that the u.s. is confident that china is thinking about providing lethal aid to russian troops in ukraine. the agency does not believe a final decision has been made. and today, the white house is urging caution. you know, beijing will have to make its own decisions about how it proceeds. whether tell provides military assistance. but if it goes down that road it will come at real cost to china. and i think china s leaders are weighing that as they make their decisions. but let s begin with the latest in the fighting in ukraine. alex marquardt is there for us. reporter: jim, some of heaviest fighting, with some of the worst casualty rates on both sides is now taking place around the eastern city of bakhmut. russian forces before the mercenary groups of convicts ....
Alexander winvindman. i ve heard informally there is chinese intelligence and liaison. the chinese don t want to see it happening. they wouldn t want to see russia triumphant. so, in any way, their strategy might mirror that of the united states. give them enough to keep them in war. hope the west will weaken and fall away. what have we heard so far? drones and ammunition. but one thing is for sure, china has plenty of military equipment and it can get it there on a train probably a lot faster than we can reinforce ukraine. and, jim, what has worried me and so many of us on the outside of the administration is that we seep to be so deliberate incremental in providing assistance to ukraine. there s a window of opportunity now to have a strategy that could get to negotiations that could lead to a successful end ....
Beyond ukraine and putin is a major security threat to really the entire world and certainly all the countries that border him there in europe. griff: do you believe and it looks that putin could take ukraine that he d attack a baltic state like estonia, lithuania, latvia, which is a nato country, which would raise the stakes. if he does take ukraine, god forbid. let s hope he doesn t. but the problem now is i think putin is battle fixated. russia triumphant in ukraine would embolden him to try and move someplace else because it would tell us two things. it would tell us that nato, u.s., and the world failed to stand with ukraine and stop putin there, and the next thing is that russia s military, if he ....
